SECOND mega earthquake hits Turkey, hours after record 7.8-magnitude tremor kills more than 1,700 people: 7.5 quake strikes as Turkey and Syria reel from overnight destruction that saw families crushed in their sleep

Turkey has been hit by a second massive earthquake, hours after an earlier catastrophic quake devastated the region and killed more than 1,700 people.

The 7.8-magnitude night-time tremor, followed hours later by a slightly smaller one, wiped out entire sections of major Turkish cities in a region filled with millions of people who have fled the civil war in Syria and other conflicts.

The later 7.5 magnitude quake struck at 1.24pm (1024 GMT) two-and-a-half miles southeast of the town of Ekinozu and around 60 miles north of the first quake that has wrought devastation across Turkey and Syria.

Hundreds are still trapped under rubble on both sides of the border as a result of the first, and the toll is expected to rise as rescue workers continue to search through mounds of wreckage for families crushed in their sleep.

Orhan Tatar, an official from the Turkish disaster agency, told reporters that the two quakes were independent of each other. He said hundreds of aftershocks were expected after both. Tremors were felt as far away as Greenland.

20,000 dead in the 1999 quake there. This looks much worse, plus survivors are dealing with hypothermia from the cold temperatures.

True. Lots of Syrian refugees in that area of Turkey now, too, swelling the population. Some of those older buildings are just gravel now. Those poor, poor people.

Yep, I fear we’re going to have a new Refugee Crisis on our hands.

appears God isn’t happy with them blocking support to Ukraine and blocking entry of Nordic countries into Nato

I see your god is a nasty little tyrant god at your personal disposal who delights in smiling people when their leaders do things you don’t like, burying helpless little babies and old ladies under concrete rubble and such. Christians don’t believe in Karma. It’s a Buddhist thing. I hope you don’t call yourself a Christian, as it’s ones like you who give us a bad name.

God DID smite Turkey for the Armenian massacre. The Ottoman Empire fell soon afterward.

Timeline - the genocide began in 1915, when there were 2 million Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire, and the empire collapsed in 1923, when fewer than 400,000 Armenians remained.

Turkey became a military dictatorship in the wake of this collapse. And it still is a military dictatorship, now reverting to the bad old ways of the Ottoman Empire.

Their only virtue was that they were anti-Soviet allies of the western powers. And now that seems to be going away.

As I said, if Russia falls, Turkey rises.

History teaches us, that one baddie always replaces another.

I fear so, too. Europe was already flooded with Syrian refugees, plus migrants floating up from Libya. And even before the war, millions of Ukrainian migrants. Now ...

But at the moment, during the crisis, prayers in order for the stricken and the rescue workers. It truly is so very, very tragic.

Well it’s an old country with plenty of old buildings so it’s not surprising when this happens many of them fall. And likely most living in them are middle to lower class.

Even with new construction, I doubt if they are built to US standards.

1. Dwellers near the SAF & JDF subduction zones take note.

2. It’s only a question of “when” and
“If” is not the answer.

Another geologic point that needs to be thought about is if you live next to historically pyroclastic volcano, there are Lanes which the pyroclastic clouds have taken in the past and geologists know these zones and have mapped them out. The problem is they built entire cities in these valleys which geologically have been funnels for superheated pyroclastic clouds of mayhem and destruction.

For example, Pompei was destroyed by the pyroclastic volcano Vesuvius. Montserrat too was devastated by pyroclastic eruptions. Mount St. Helens, Pinatubo etc...

Earth is a dynamic planet. Study up on extinction events. I actually find it humorous when experts, scientific experts are asked about what mankind can hope to achieve in the next “million years.” The answers are laughable, given the planets propensity towards “do-overs.” Not to mention cosmological collisions, or solar blasts directed towards the solar system we inhabit.

The stuff that nightmares are made of. Hopefully, a lot of people chose to shelter outdoors following the first big quake.

As Naples will be someday.

Theyre asking for Israel’s help. If it was the other way around the islamos would be dancing in the streets and passing out sweets.

“And ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.”

From what I read earlier, many were outside shivering in the cold afraid to go back inside for fear of aftershocks. Let’s hope they were still outdoors when it hit.
