A sixth Memphis Police Department officer has been relieved of duty in connection to the case of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man who died days after he was fatally beaten during a traffic stop earlier this month.
Driving the news: Preston Hemphill was relieved from the force as an investigation is ongoing, department spokesperson Christopher Williams confirmed Monday, days after the city of Memphis released harrowing footage of Nichols' arrest.
Background: Five fired Memphis police officers involved in Nichols' arrest were each charged last week with second degree murder.
Former officers Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills, Jr. and Justin Smith, who are also Black men, were each also charged with aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct and official oppression.
Hemphill had been hired in 2018, per Williams.
The big picture: The Department of Justice and the FBI Memphis Field Office are investigating whether Nichols' civil rights were violated by police.
While the Shelby County medical examiner's office has not released an official cause of death, attorneys representing Nichols' family revealed last week that preliminary findings from an independent autopsy revealed he "suffered extensive bleeding caused by a severe beating."
Following the release of the video footage, the Memphis Police Department announced that it had permanently disbanded the special unit Scorpion in the wake of the murder charges brought against five of its members.
Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis on Friday before the videos' release condemned the actions of the officers involved in Nichols' arrest, calling their behavior "unconscionable."
Davis said at the time two paramedics were also under investigation by the Memphis fire chief over their actions throughout the incident, as an assessment of the footage indicated that they delayed in giving medical care to Nichols.

Mighty FANCY bull horn that guy is holding in the pic.
Getty so, can’t post it............
They desperately needed to find a white guy to charge so the riots could start!
why can’t you post it because it’s Getty?
Not allowed.................
What happened to Nichols was a real eye opener. If that’s what happens to black men when they get arrested, no wonder they all run.
“A sixth Memphis Police Department officer has been relieved of duty in connection to the case of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man who died days after he was fatally beaten during a traffic stop earlier this month.”
So he was fatally beaten and died days later.
I fully fail to comprehend the media obsession with this story. Victim, Black, Cops, Black. They can’t even use this story to pmump up the “White=Racist” meme.
So, what’s the point? Slow news week? Look over here, not over there? Are they trying to pump up the “Defund the Police” agenda?
I don’t get it; it’s not even that interesting or unusual in US cities. Why all the emphasis on this story?
“ The Department of Justice and the FBI Memphis Field Office are investigating whether Nichols’ civil rights were violated by police.”
That’s a real brain twister. Hope they can figure it out
See post #2.
Sorry I meant post #3.
The issue here is corrupt police killing a man for no apparent reason.
What happened in Memphis was they changed the benefits package (in other words, took away benefits) so most of the senior officers just retired or went to other police departments.
The city council also did not want to hire policemen from other counties. They wanted the police to come only from Memphis (although the state government eventually stepped in and overruled the city late last year).
So Memphis is left hiring police who probably would not qualify for the police force of other cities. They will even hire people with criminal records (according to local radio host).
So you have here the worst example of policing caught right on camera.
It opened a lot of people’s eyes.
And it’s going to make a lot of people run, just like Tyre did. They’re running out of the big cities.
Not a Getty image of Preston.
I am wondering how many officers on this “police force” have criminal records. The Chief and Mayor, too.
Guess they couldn’t hang it on Richard Jewell due to his being dead.
The the chief and the mayor are ultimately responsible for hiring these 5 criminals.
No, it’s what happens WHEN they run.
Simple formula that works in all places and all races:
Don’t Resist Arrest - Don’t get your ass beat.
To stoke civil strife.
Federalize police force?
Whatever it is, it isn’t going to be good for citizens.
Low IQ people and drugs are flooding our country, and nothing is done.
But, we have $137 billion for a non NATO, non ally for a war.
It’s all BS.
It’s that simple.
