The White House on Friday said it has already approved around 16 million Americans for student debt relief ahead of Supreme Court debate on whether or not the program will be allowed to proceed.

The White House revealed the figure in a press release, noting that around 26 million individuals were poised to receive student debt relief in September of last year, and that “over 16 million of those borrowers’ applications were fully approved by the Department and sent to loan servicers.”

The program was put on pause in November when the Supreme Court ordered a halt to the proceedings as it considered lawsuits critical of the forgiveness plan.

The high court is expected to hear arguments regarding the plan on Feb. 28.

Yours is the best answer, but Team Biden is hanging its hat on the 2003 Heroes act which:

"allows the Secretary of the US Department of Education to waive or modify any statutory or regulatory provisions relating to Title IV student financial aid in times of war or military operation or national emergency. It was signed into law on August 18, 2003. ~ snip ~ including People who suffer economic hardship as a result of a war, military operation, or national emergency."

https://www.fastweb.com/financial-aid/articles/heroes-act-of-2003 It depends on what national emergency means I guess. Republicans keep on creating gifts for Democrats.

Thank you GW Bush, Denny Hastert, and Bill Frist.

You have an imperial presidency, unless you can keep a republic.

that won’t stop them from doing it.

Once the horse is out of the barn the SCOTUS can’t put it back in.

Both of my daughters had their loans zeroed out on their loan dashboard, so somebody paid them.

One is a nurse and the other is a microbiologist. Their loans were much less than the 20k maximum.

What about people with car notes, house notes?

Why is one segment of the population deserving of loan forgiveness, reparations, etc.?

What about all the descendents of the hundreds of thousands of Americans killed in battle defending the country?

Its just preparation and waiting until Democrats take over again, and it will demanded/passed on the first day of the new Congress

Its standard procedure for every leftist Program of the last 60 years.

Only if bankruptcy was back on the table. The banks are even worse about student debt without the possibility of filing for bankruptcy if that’s the only means of relief available.

anyone else tried discussing this with a student who has a government loan?

it’s like: people need more (X). I am studying to become an (X). i can’t repay my loan because they don’t pay me enough. therefore my government loan should be forgiven.

the question “where would the money come from” generates a blank stare.

more questions, generating more blank stares:

* what are the principles and benefits of a free market economy?

* why did the roman empire fall? how can the usa escape the fate of other civilizations before it?

* did you ever take an introductory course in economics?

* what are the disadvantages of a centrally planned economy?

Because somehow we have let those tiny minorities get way, way too much power. Somehow through guilt and shame they amassed staggering power and nobody has told any of them “NO!”

Senate - 05/18/2022 Read twice and referred to the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions

https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/senate-bill/4253

Even if it passed, Biden would veto it.
