Banks’ comments came after Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen informed House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) last week that the U.S. government has hit the $31.3 trillion debt ceiling. Yellen told McCarthy she would use “extraordinary measures” to prevent the United States from defaulting on its debt.
Banks told CBS New’s Robert Costa that House Republicans have a “duty to use that majority the American people gave us to address real spending reforms.”
News here from House Republican Jim Banks, a former chair of the conservative Republican Study Committee and Sen candidate: He doesn't believe Soc. Sec, Medicare, or Medicaid cuts should be on the table with debt-limit negotiations.

“So The debt limit sets up an opportunity for us to have a serious conversation. I hope that Democrats will come to the table,” Banks said. “I hope President Biden will come to the table. I hope that Senate Leader Schumer and the Senate Democrats will come to the table with House Republicans and talk about what we can agree on. That’s what a negotiation is all about.”
“Do you want Social Security and Medicare to be on the table as part of these negotiations?” Costa asked Banks.
“No,” Banks emphatically responded. “I can speak on behalf of the vast majority of Republicans in the majority: I don’t think that any of us want to touch Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, programs that seniors and others are relying on today or who will soon rely on those programs.”

Pretty much guaranteed that will happen.
Agree!
If you say something, then you have to explain what you said. You’ve lost round 1 of the discussion. If you keep explaining as some dumb-ass politicians do, you’re digging yourself a hole and continuing to lose!
The FIRST point of negotiation should be the funding for 87,000+ IRS thugs.
The American people are too soft, weak, and addicted to socialism to even consider it.
I’m saving up for a $280 dozen of eggs.
Three days ago I paid $6.07 (before tax) for 18 eggs at WalMart - 6 years ago, a WalMart in the next city over was ... overstocked - they were selling 18 for $1.34.
The $6.07 price I saw online yesterday afternoon was already $6.14 by the time I hit the store about 9:30 p.m. (gasoline was up 20 cents a gallon too).
So I opted for the 36 pack for $12.07 (again, before tax).
I just fried up the 15 remaining in the first pack and two cans of Armour Treet (spam) - in butter, with chives, salt and pepper.
BOY those cans of Armour Treet were hard to pull open - yikes - they popped easily but I think they welded that easy-pull top on.....heli-arc maybe.
And that......was part of breakfast - rest in fridge
Spam, spam, eggs, and spam ... and eggs
It is a shame.
Too many folks who think of themselves as conservative are seniors on the SS payouts and depend on it. Can’t touch it unless the proposals are couched in reforming for younger generations.
Yep, geezers love their own socialist entitlements and will never give them up, the country be damned. Then they’ll claim to be ‘conservative’ and patriots.
You’re an idiot. Why should anyone “give up” what they were forced to pay in for?
Happens all the time in the real world. It’s called ‘taking a haircut’ in the business world. But in the socialist entitlement world, I realize that leftwingers would rather do anything than do that.
As soon as the Baby Boomers die off all will be well.
“The business world” isn’t compulsory.
Yep… sign of the times.
Forced, yes, but they did vote for people that kept growing that system instead of reforming. We or our children may go a different direction, I doubt it, but I desire it. Just because you believed in a ponzi scheme does mean that we still do. You elected people that said we will take your money and give it to other people, vote for us. Maybe we just cut the stealing from the producers to enough to cover a ratio of 1/6 instead of the current ration of 1/2, payers to consumers. The demographics demand a change. But I guess printing, paying out and inflation is an easier pill for people to swallow. But please just stop bitching about inflation if you refuse to touch entitlements.

Over 65% of spending go to SS, Medical, and welfare. None of which the Feds have any constitutional authority.
Hey jack wagon...I've paid under duress really to the Feds for SSI for years.
And if your self-employed you pay DOUBLE.
I pay over 43% on every dime I make....And YES I earned it. And I am a CONSERVATIVE.!!
So go back to wherever you came from!
I’m very happy I got a lot more out of it than I ever put in. It’s great.
But I’m a realist and realize that it should just be scrapped at best, cut payments by 50% at worst. Sorry.
You are a newbie idiot.....
