Banks’ comments came after Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen informed House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) last week that the U.S. government has hit the $31.3 trillion debt ceiling. Yellen told McCarthy she would use “extraordinary measures” to prevent the United States from defaulting on its debt.
Banks told CBS New’s Robert Costa that House Republicans have a “duty to use that majority the American people gave us to address real spending reforms.”
News here from House Republican Jim Banks, a former chair of the conservative Republican Study Committee and Sen candidate: He doesn't believe Soc. Sec, Medicare, or Medicaid cuts should be on the table with debt-limit negotiations.

“So The debt limit sets up an opportunity for us to have a serious conversation. I hope that Democrats will come to the table,” Banks said. “I hope President Biden will come to the table. I hope that Senate Leader Schumer and the Senate Democrats will come to the table with House Republicans and talk about what we can agree on. That’s what a negotiation is all about.”
“Do you want Social Security and Medicare to be on the table as part of these negotiations?” Costa asked Banks.
“No,” Banks emphatically responded. “I can speak on behalf of the vast majority of Republicans in the majority: I don’t think that any of us want to touch Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, programs that seniors and others are relying on today or who will soon rely on those programs.”

> Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN) said House Republicans are “adamant” about leaving entitlements like Social Security and Medicare untouched... <
Now there’s a Republican with some common sense. Because one of the easiest ways to drive folks into voting Democrat is to talk about messing with Social Security and Medicare.
And yes, I know the programs are in financial difficulty. As is the rest of the federal government. So how about cuts elsewhere? A good start would be to quit sending billions of dollars overseas.
Republicans are so stupid for even bringing up social security to begin with knowing they don’t have the senate and presidency. Idiots! I wouldn’t be shocked if they lose the house again next year.
Hey Jim, let’s start by taking away the freebies from the “gib me dats” and illegals.
Given his history, I don’t think Gym Jordan will leave anything untouched. I think he and some of his hangers on in Congress are gunning for Social Security and Medicare.
“Do you want Social Security and Medicare to be on the table as part of these negotiations?” Costa asked Banks....”
Costa was setting the DS/RAT’s trap to spring on the GOP......
Banks saw right thru it....and so should the rest of em.
There’s plenty of “low-hanging” fruit within the federal govt to cut without “tossing grandma out into the street”.
I understand the politics of why Republicans aren’t bringing up entitlements. But that is what is driving our out-of-control debt. Any talk of fiscal responsibility is meaningless without talking about entitlement reform. But Republicans and Democrats will just kick the can down the road for a future generation. I just hope I’m dead before the country goes bankrupt.
I'm not saying SS is good. It's a Ponzi scheme. But SS payments aren't coming out of the U.S. Treasury anyway.
If this is true, can anyone please explain the GOPe strategy of floating this social security/Medicare nonsense every few years? It might be the dopiest of all dopey things the Dopey Party does.
> Idiots! I wouldn’t be shocked if they lose the house again next year. <
You just wait and see. Maybe a month before the 2024 election, a leading Republican will say that Social Security needs to be “re-examined”. And another one will say, “Everything is on the table for cuts.” Democrats will jump on that, and the House will slip away.
Yep. Idiots indeed.
- signed, another Death Wish Republican.
We’re getting back to explaining ourselves. That means we’re losing.
Linda promised legislation banning abortions after 15 weeks while people were were reacting to Roe being overturned. Can’t even wait for the dust to settle. Stupid.
Correct. All of these debt bombs are being passed down to gen x,y,z etc. R’s and D’s are squandering the us dollar and destroying the future.
So happy to be able to receive my monthly $4,000.00 Social Security Check.
See! The “promise” was kept.
Now I’ll head out the door to the store and buy a $300.00 loaf of bread and $250.00 gallon of milk.
But at least I got my monthly S.S. check...
Too bad. They could limit SS and Disability Benefits for illegals.
As a disabled veteran (shot in the lower back), I went to a SS office in Manassas VA. The line was long but NOT will 65+ year olds, but ALL were 20-30 Latinos in great shape, collecting SS disability patyments.
Cue Linda Graham: "We are going to cancel SS, absolutely."
but those obscene welfare benefits must be on the table!!!
Between this idiocy by Graham and McConnell telling the nation just before the midterms that support for Zelenskyy was "our top priority", many votes were lost.
I'm thinking it was intentional.
Republicans touching Social Security is a democrat wet dream... Scum of the earth democrats. Liars and fear mongers...
