VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis criticized laws that criminalize homosexuality as “unjust,” saying God loves all his children just as they are and called on Catholic bishops who support the laws to welcome LGBTQ people into the church.
“Being homosexual isn’t a crime,” Francis said during an exclusive interview Tuesday with The Associated Press.
Francis acknowledged that Catholic bishops in some parts of the world support laws that criminalize homosexuality or discriminate against the LGBTQ community, and he himself referred to the issue in terms of “sin.” But he attributed such attitudes to cultural backgrounds, and said bishops in particular need to undergo a process of change to recognize the dignity of everyone.
“These bishops have to have a process of conversion,” he said, adding that they should apply “tenderness, please, as God has for each one of us.”
Francis’ comments are the first uttered by a pope about such laws, but they are consistent with his overall approach to the LGBTQ community and belief that the Catholic Church should welcome everyone and not discriminate.
Some 67 countries or jurisdictions worldwide criminalize consensual same-sex sexual activity, 11 of which can or do impose the death penalty, according to The Human Dignity Trust, which works to end such laws. Experts say even where the laws are not enforced, they contribute to harassment, stigmatization and violence against LGBTQ people.

It’s a sin. But sins don’t always translate into civil crimes.
If that were the case it would be illegal for the police to lie to a suspect.
The pope of semantics.
Correct-—we’re all sinners but that does not make us criminals in a worldly sense.
Of course the media runs with this title to make it seem that all Christians are Nazis and want “The Handmaid’s tale” to become reality.
I’m not exactly supportive of the pope. But I don’t trust any information coming to as “...said during an exclusive interview Tuesday with The Associated Press”.
It’s a crime in some parts of the world, but it’s a sin in the Lord’s eyes across all of humanity.
You’d think this Pope is not part of the church.
“… he attributed such attitudes to cultural backgrounds, and said bishops in particular need to undergo a process of change to recognize the dignity of everyone.…”

So, are the two “married” homosexual males who adopted two boys who they promptly raped and farmed out to their homosexual buddies “dignified” and FILLED WITH DIGNITY?
He is leading his sheep astray. He will reap what he sows.
Leviticus says the complete opposite.
Its not that its illeagal. ITS THAT ITS A SIN.
It is an abomination. Based on that, it should be illegal.
And people wonder why the churches are empty….
The Sin of Scandal (look it up) is far more dangerous than any other sin because the Sin of Scandal leads others astray.
Still, this Pope will not recognize anything that might force him to excommunicate those “Catholic” politicians who are supportive of abortion.
The Scandal cause by the Roman Curia at this time reeks of hypocrisy.
The Leader of the Roman Catholic Church, everybody.
It would appear that whoever is pulling the puppet strings has gotten to the Church too. Sad.
To think that there were Holy Wars fought over that church and religion. And I’m a Roman Catholic. So sad.
It would be helpful if he would quit promoting it.
Satan and his Legions have a foothold in the Church.
ANTI pope pos. NOT the Pope. Evil.
No. There’s nothing dignified about anal sodomy anyway ...
