Not in my HUGE back yard! 156-unit low-income housing project sparks outrage in billionaire's playground Nantucket - where Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman and former Secretary of State John Kerry spend their summers
Plans to build an affordable housing project on Nantucket, Surfside Crossing, were first submitted in April 2018, and have been hotly contested ever since
Developers want to create 156 homes on a 13.5-acre site, with 70 percent designated for people who live on the island year-round They said 15 of the homes and 24 of the condos would be sold for between $261,000 and $373,000, but locals say the island cannot support the building
View comments Plans to build an affordable housing complex in Nantucket remain in limbo after locals objected to the scheme, insisting the affluent island does not have the infrastructure or resources for the development.
Surfside Crossing promised 156 homes on the 13.5-acre site, with 70 percent designated for people who live on the island year-round.
On an island where a 5,075- square-foot home recently went for $33 million, and where John Kerry and Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman spend their summers, securing housing for those working in tourism or the local economy is a perennial challenge.
Local developers Jamie Feeley and Josh Posner, who previously constructed an award-winning 40-home affordable housing project on the island called Beach Plum Village, said that their proposal was the answer.
Most people on the island think affordable housing is the No. 1 problem facing it,' said Posner.

Also, IIRC, they had a fund with hundreds of thousands of dollars donated to help the illegals but not sure if they even used a penny to help them.
Add windmills so it’s green...lotsa windmills...on land and at sea...the whirr whirr whirr is a sound to behold.

Not blaming Trump, but pointing his team is giving what they get.

I haven’t seen this in the Boston Globe I wonder why?
Well as we move to a more feudal model there will be many more live ins
The most hilarious example I have seen of “no housing for workers” is Jackson Hole, WY.
The workers have to live in Idaho and commute over a huge mountain which is very treacherous during the winter.
Low end - put 10% down ($26.1K) on $261K. That leaves you with a mortgage of approx $235K.
Monthly payment on $235K for 30 years fixed at 6.212% with ins and taxes: $1800.00
It would seem that "low income" folks in Nantucket are middle to upper class in most other parts of the country. Not surprised that the locals quickly got rid of the illegals bused to their paradise. They were indeed alien to those nice, virtue signaling, sanctuary city promising - Nantucketites. Most of those illegals couldn't afford a $50K house, let alone one for $261K.
$261,000 and $373,000 homes in Nantucket would be for "low income" folks. Sheesh!!!
“300K is affordable?”
“$261,000 and $373,000 homes in Nantucket would be for “low income” folks. Sheesh!!!”
Unfortunately it’s like that in many places. Where I live in Montana $350,000 will — sometimes — buy a condo. Very hard to purchase anything under $400,000. Homes are $600,000 and up.
Actually $261,000 on Nantucket sounds GREAT!
Biden’s illegals have to live some place might as well be Nantucket deal with it.
My wife and I honeymooned on Cape Cod. We drove all the way up to Provincetown, and visited Nantucket. It was a pretty, laid back place.
There were plenty of the “Pahk the cah in the Hahvahd Yahd” people all around, but the sailing museums were neat with plenty of history. Back then we didn’t pay attention to politics and I don’t remember seeing any references thereof.
Although there may have been.
In no way would I want to revisit the place.
Mystic Seaport was really interesting. Saw the ship they used in Moby Dick when I visited in the mid 70’s.
Blackrock has been buying up properties everywhere turning them into rental properties and DESTROYING what once were very nice neighborhoods!! What once were beautiful tree lined streets you start seeing cars parked everywhere unmanicured lawns more than one family living in single family dwellings!! People who have worked their whole life to move into a really nice neighborhood is NOW being destroyed by these bastards BUT OMG don’t touch their neighborhoods SCREW THEM!!! BUILD THEM NOW!!!
Yep. Back in the 90s I worked for the Section 8 housing program. This is when they started the “magic carpet ride from the hood to the ‘burbs” program under Clintoon.
They had maps of the suburbs indicating where they wanted to transport the dregs of humanity to. ALL of the local Section 8 DIRECTORS/ADMINISTRATIONS neighborhoods were off limits according to the maps. I pointed this out and boy was I a pariah for doing so.
We were there in ‘81. Saw a lightship. In a museum, we saw the ship’s log (I think) or book that was the inspiration for Heman Melville to write “Moby Dick”.
I just don’t remember that clearly, it was 41+ years ago…
Lots of scrimshaw…
Scrimshaw was really amazing. Some really gorgeous pieces.
Frankly, there should be no government housing anywhere!

We have an inkling that is what happened directly across the street from us. When we bought, across the street was (is) the golf course. The land between the street and the golf course was so steep the realtor told us it would be impossible to be built on.
In 2021 we noticed little colored flags appearing along that side of the street. Then bulldozers and trucks loaded with fill. Then 12 lots being built on with cookie cutter s—t boxes, side by side.
Riff-raff moved in. Different people coming and going all times of the day and night. Our mail goes missing sometimes. We have a security system but I’m always worried when we go out. I can’t take ALL of my jewelry with me and I’d like it to be there when we come home.
Evidence points to the probability that we’re being infiltrated.
They’re rat bastard hypocrites. Look how fast they got rid of the illegals when DeSantis sent them to Marthas Vineyard. They were so horrified they wanted DeSantis charged with a crime
HA!! And that MORON is still a Pol.
