He didn’t really have to. Those numbers were not the reality of 1960scourts and jails. Even in places like NY prison pop was normally a white majority. In the early 60s my HS friends and I would often walk after a Mets game at the Polo Grounds, past the Harlem River Projects across the 161st St Bridge to the Yankee Stadium subway station. Just to guarantee a seat of the train. Never had any issue. But in those days most Black families were intact, in spite of the undeniable social discrimination. Along came LBJ and the War on Poverty and the Black family was destroyed as if it were targeted. Moynihan knew it and said so. Nixon tried to revive it but was driven from office, maybe because his effort to deal with the catastrophe of black family dissolution was a serious threat to the Dems. By the middle od the 70s the deed was done. What we have now MLK never envisaged.

There's a small stretch of E MLK Blvd in Tampa, by St Joseph Hospital, even has a Starschmucks on it. But, yeah, near my old stomping grounds in the infamous Hill section of Spring Valley, NY the corner of MLK and Harriet Tubman is just about the most dangerous 'hood in the Hudson Valley
