A 6-year-old first-grader at an elementary school in Newport News, Virginia, shot a teacher on Friday afternoon during an altercation in a classroom, authorities said, leaving her with "life-threatening" injuries and renewing calls from parent's for greater classroom safety and oversight.

The 6-year-old boy shot 30-year-old Abigail Zwerner, a first-grade teacher at Richneck Elementary School. She was rushed to Riverside Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries following the incident.

Actually, my NordVPN does. It has an additional layer that when turned ‘on’ keeps ads, malicious spyware, malware etc out.

I also use NordVPN.
I know that the website says it protects from all of that, but it isn’t 100% true...

All it takes is to log onto the wrong website, and there are many, that malicious code slips through, and now you will have an open back door.

(I have been on computers since 1980.. Trust me)

There IS a simple/safer way though (if you are using Winblows).. download and install a program called “sandboxie”.

Run your browser in (with) Sandboxie, and everything stays within the box. It makes its own little sub-compartment (makes the browser inside a fold, that thinks it is the whole operating system), and can’t see ANYTHING outside of that folder.
THAT, is the second level of protection... (and there are many more levels, but these 2 are the safest for non-geeks)

I wish I had pinged you to the original post, but I didn’t think about it at the time.

Anyway, to convince this new FReeper that ‘just VPN’ is not necessarily safe (even if their website says it is)...

I also use NordVPN. Quite nice.

However, Bikkuri is correct that a VPN, by itself, does not protect a computer from maliciousness.

I also use (in conjunction with my VPN), NoScript and AdBlock Plus.

It can make some of my net surfing inconvenient, but I've gotten used to the additional steps needed to make some web sites work the way I want them to. For instance, I tend to forget that youtube has ads. If I order a pizza online, I have to allow an extra domain permission to place the order--but I do that only temporarily.

So yeah--I surf the net, but my experience is probably unlike that of most people as a lot of places I go to are like FR--text only and just informational.

I have a select few sites I go to. One is DM which is loaded with pop-up ads and as I understood it, that was the problem from the original post (#4) that I was answering. I do not have that problem with DM any longer after installing the NordVPN a couple of years ago plus the additional protection against malware or malicious spyware or whatever else that they provide.

I know you feel 'superior' because you think I'm "new" but sign up dates mean squat. People on here don't seem to be as rabid about them (except for a select few) as some years back. So chill about the dates and know that some people know what they're talking about even if their sign up date is later than yours.

Might want to evaluate it.
Lol.

There are some strange people in the world.
A certain percentage of them can be found on Free Republic.
Keep your spirits up.
They are just hecklers, and voices in the peanut gallery.

I have no idea what you’re going on about.
You don’t either.
I’m old with not much hair - so you’re not striking any nerves with me.
But I see a lot of hard working younger kids every day at the hospital where I work. Many look like the 99% that you say are bad.
They’re not.

New information released . . . .

James S. Ellenson, the lawyer for the family of the 6 year old has released a statement.

Lawyer: 6-year-old who shot teacher has ‘acute disability’

https://apnews.com/article/education-virginia-newport-news-children-33ed30539f279405f696ad10d4ff46a1

Apparently the 6 year old has intellectual and behavioral disabilities. I don’t know if his special education was for him alone, or if the entire class he was in was a “special education” class. But the child was in a very rare “individualized education program” or IEP, which is provided to students with disabilities under federal law.

Regarding the disability, the family said the boy “was under a care plan at the school that included his mother or father attending school with him and accompanying him to class every day.”

But for whatever reasons, there was no parent with the child the day of the shooting. And... get this...

The superintendent of Newport News schools revealed last week that Richneck administrators had learned the child may have had a weapon before the shooting. But a search did not find the handgun, despite staff looking through his bag.

Ellenson told The Associated Press by phone Thursday evening that his understanding is that the gun was in the mother’s closet on a top shelf that was well over six feet high. The weapon also had a trigger lock that requires a key, similar to a bike lock.

I think is room here for many lawsuits from the parents of students that witnessed this shooting, against the school district.
