In what has been the most dramatic election for Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives in a hundred years, final culmination came on the fifteenth ballot with the election of Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.
The election however did not come without McCarthy’s historic commitment to a heroic band of 20 opponents who negotiated substantial policy initiatives as well as procedural rule changes that will transform the role of the Speaker from a dictatorial empire-builder, and with it, make the House of Representatives into a more self-governing representative body.
In a series of ground-breaking agreements, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) who emerged as one of the final six still standing, explained that McCarthy opponents had “delivered a massive victory for the American people by fundamentally changing the way Congress will operate.” Boebert cited the way bills will be passed, the way the government will be funded and the way committees will be formed” - saying all will be dramatically changed while eliminating proxy voting, securing votes on term limits, a fair tax, and the Texas Border Plan.
Upon being sworn in, McCarthy announced that the first order of business for the 118th Session of Congress will be repeal of the 87,000 armed IRS agents who are on the trail of the American public, which was met with unanimous agreement within Republican ranks.
The first test of McCarthy’s commitments as Speaker will be adoption of an agreed-to Rules package which adds three new Members to the influential Rules Committee, as well as an essential Motion to Vacate, which offers the necessary leverage to assure that commitments made will be commitments kept.

The house holds the money. They can hire the agents but the house can refuse to pay them.

Exactly - the House can zero out funding for any program. The problem in the past has always been weak-kneed Republican members who can’t stand up to Democrat media sob stories. Those would be a much harder sell, though, if they tried to glorify IRS expansion.

As I heard it explained, the ability to block that is solely based on some of the rules changes that Gaetz and team fought for.
McCarthy's plan was just to pass a meaningless resolution, that the Senate would never take up.
But something known as the Holman (sp?) Rule, will now be re-instated, and allows the House to zero out individual items within a funding bill.
Another new rule is going to require the separation of each individual department's funding before Obama's Omnibus came along, which would allow them to block the funding for the entire Treasury department to stop it.
So before, they could do nothing. With the new rules, they will at least have the necessary power to control it completely within the House.
Even if this was approved they can hold future funding for anything hostage for a repeal. They won’t of course because that would take some spine and/or some balls. They RINO wing of the Uniparty has neither.

The House passes a bill to repeal the 87,000 agents. Likely he can get the entire Republican caucus in the House to vote for this so assume it passes the House. It then goes to the Senate. Schumer’s Democrats will likely vote it down, joined by a few Republicans (Collins, Murkowski, possibly Romney). It dies in the Senate, McCarthy can say he tried.
Even if for some reason a few Democrat Senators voted with Republicans to pass the legislation in the Senate, Biden will almost certainly veto the legislation.
Essentially repealing the 87,000 IRS agents is an empty promise. It lets McCarthy appear to be doing something positive for the GOP voter base and it allows the Democrats to preserve the status quo.
Thirty seconds or thirty feet, which ever comes first!
If McCarthy uses the Holman Rule and GOP solidarity is maintained, they can reduce the funding for the 87,000 IRS agents down to a point where it only exists on paper.
Only the House is involved.
Or they can attach it to some bill that the Senate cannot vote down, and Biden can’t veto.

Well, there is a way to make the rules permanent, by passing a bill into law that purports to live past the current Congress, requiring repeal rather than mere amendment.
That would be a squawk.
If that were to happen that would mean the Earth has stopped spinning and the aliens have landed on the White House lawn...:)
I think what is frustrating for many people myself included is that we have no consistency in our legislative process. Some issues should be no brainers, e.g. defense, social security. Yet when the control of Congress changes it’s like we start all over again and have ridiculous fights over issues that many Americans are in support of such as I mentioned above. It’s as if the politicians need to prove they are in power and We the People get ignored yet again.
That is why I think the rise in populism got Trump elected. People wanted a change and that was how they saw a way to maybe make that happen. I’m not gonna re-fight what happened during those 4 years but we are living with the results today.
For those who actually study America’s political history this is not really anything new. It is just more obvious now due to the speed of how information, both true and untrue, is spread. We see in real time events as they occur in high definition...warts and all..:)
You are right. But I am happy to be informed.And warts....never bothered me much.
Populism also rose because people became informed which is why the left has moved to control 100% of the media and all social platforms.
We are still beating them. And they know it.
And part of the problem is that many people do not take the time or make the effort to discern what is being said or shown. They assume it is honest and factual. We are all biased in our views whether we are aware of it or not. And that carries over into our politics.
I have been flamed and accused of posting “liberal” talking points. Yet there are no cogent counter arguments just a repetition of talking points or views from a source the poster has gotten their information from. And who is say those sites are not biased in their views. I read a lot of different sources from around the world and this country. And I’ll tell you, as you probably already know, that opinions and views vary widely. So it is up to the reader to filter out the bias and find the facts for themselves and not assume the writer has no agenda or is not biased.
I hold strong opinions on many issues. But I certainly don’t think my opinions are the last word. If you can convince me I am wrong thru facts and information I will certainly reconsider my views. I may not change them but I am not going to attack anyone or demean them for holding those views. I will just disagree. That doesn’t make me evil or something.
Which is normal, for someone who just joined a few weeks ago, if they are posting liberal talking points. There's a typical next step, if the behavior continues, commonly referred to as "the zot" which you have probably heard of by now as well.
