A tense moment on the House of Representatives floor resulted in a Republican member physically lunging at another who then had to be restrained from further escalation.
The scuffle happened between Reps-elect Mike Rogers, R-Ala., and Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., after the 14th House speaker vote failed.
Gaetz was discussing with Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., the possibility of backing him in the next vote and appeared to mouth the worth "committee."
Gaetz is currently on the House Armed Services Committee, which is chaired by Rogers.
McCarthy appeared to agree and returned to his seat. Rogers, having witnessed the interaction, then walked up to Gaetz’s row and made a move toward him.
Rep. Richard Hudson, R-N.C., intervened and physically restrained Rogers, pulling him back by his shoulders in full view of C-SPAN’s cameras.
Rogers could then be seen appearing to yell: "I won’t forget this!"
In the 15th and final vote, McCarthy was officially elected speaker with Gaetz voting "present."

did the situation warrant a throat punch?
As an Alabama voter rest assured Alabama voters won’t forget what Robers did.
Probably a good thing that guns are prohibited in congress.
Forget the BS, especially jealous Mike Rogers.
The press is full tonight of Congresspeople already praising Gaetz of how he actually IMPROVED the Congress, by the changes going forward.
That would include McCarthy, who in an interview I saw just spoke very highly of Gaetz.
Well done to all.
Still not as bad as Preston Brooks.
This sort of stuff used to only happen in foreign politics.
As an Alabama voter rest assured Alabama voters won’t forget what Rogers did. I thought I misspelled Rogers name previously but “Robers” may have been a Freudian slip.
Wonder if Gaetz snagged his committee chairmanship?
Liked Gaetz prior to this.
Wasn’t this a sellout?
Why is Rogers the bad guy here?
Gaetz committee membership will remain, if not improve. McCarthy himself realizes Gaetz has power he needs to harness, not fight any further.
Rogers did what I would have done.
I guess we will find out if it was worth it Monday when the pass house rules. I would not be surprised if McCarthy does not keep his word on agreed concessions. Anyway we can look forward to nothing being done on important conservative issues for at least two more years and probably loosing seats in 24 and not even getting the White House.
I can’t wait until McCarthy stabs Trump in the back. Trump just does not have the ability to spot a snake when he sees one.
If they get what is promised (no more Omnibus, 12 separate department funding bills, and a minimum of 72 hours to review each) then this is the greatest political victory since Obama created the Omnibus.
Good thing Rogers wore a helmet onto the House floor.
Seriously though, Rogers got a little over 31,000 votes in his last primary. AL-3 Freepers, find someone who can legitimately draw 35,000 votes in a primary and work your ass off for that person. If ballot harvesting is a thing there, harvest the hell out of that district.
AOC has a congressional seat for life because she got folks to find 16,000 votes in a primary against the #4 Democrat in the House. Dave Brat found 36,000 votes against Eric Cantor, then the #3 Republican in the House. Find the candidates who can win those barely contested primaries and beat the pavement for them.
You beat me to it.
A cane was good enough for Preston Brooks.
Interesting DR I hadn’t thought of that.
