California will lose this case in court.
When I was considering a job in California, I discovered that California taxed the retirement income of persons who had prviously lived in the state. IOW, if you ever filed a tax return in CA, then CA believed they could tax your retirement income year after you left the state and were no longer resident in the state. They lost that case in federal court. They will lose this one.

I guess backlash from the unions is the only thing that had prevented them from going after the public pensions.

My wife retired from Sacramento County. We are now in Florida.
No taxes are withhheld from her retirement and we file no state tax returns.

That would piss me off if the law still existed. I have a CalPers retirement.

The Fabric of Our Society Is Coming Apart at the Seams Right in Front of Our Eyes I was in the Navy early 1990's in San Diego and at one of our 'safety stand downs' a CALOSH turd came and lectured us about drips from our helo's and all the tens of thousands we could be fined by them since it washes into the bay.
He went on to gloat about how we would all have to pay CA tax on our retirements if we lived in CA for any part of our career. The state was going to get their share of our retirement checks no matter where we were.
We laughed the idiot out of the room.

I was in that situation, worked in CA, then the company moved me out of state, and in the relocation paperwork there was a form regarding CA tax; I signed it and never heard anything from CA about taxes.

My relocation happened in 2011, so it was after Congress had put a stop to them going after people that had moved out.

I discovered that California taxed the retirement income of persons who had previously lived in the state. Many years ago California started to send tax bills to retired military members who had been stationed in that State. The tax corresponded to the percentage of their military time stationed in California. IIRC it had to go all the way to the Supreme Court to stop them.

I left California for some years a while back, and about 2-3 years after I left, the state of California decided that I owed them something like $200 in back taxes, from whatever kind of audit they decided to run. They couldn't find me, but they found one of my bank accounts with Chase, and without informing me, took out all the money in the account (it was only about $100) and Chase cooperated with them, of course.
Our country is run by communists.
