Republicans in chaos as Kevin McCarthy loses SECOND ballot for Speaker: GOP rebels refuse to back leader and throw their weight behind Jim Jordan with party in disarray on first day in the majority
Daily Mail UK ^ | 13:38 EST, 3 January 2023 | UPDATED: 15:25 EST, 3 January 2023 | By ELIZABETH ELKIND, U.S. POLITICAL REPORTER

The new House of Representatives gaveled into its first session on Tuesday

Nearly two dozen of Kevin McCarthy's fellow Republicans voted against his bid to be House Speaker in the first and second rounds

Voting is expected to continue until a Speaker candidate wins a majority

Nineteen Republican rebels have derailed House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy's second vote to become Speaker, throwing the party into chaos on their first day in the majority.

The group of dissenters are refusing to back McCarthy and instead threw their weight behind GOP Rep. Jim Jordan in the second ballot of the process that is leaving the start of Congress in limbo.

It is the first time in 100 years a Speaker has not been chosen in the first ballot. Now McCarthy, who can only afford to lose four votes out of the 222 Republican members, is facing an uphill battle to take over the gavel from Nancy Pelosi.

If the 19 Republicans stand firm in their opposition of McCarthy, the GOP will have to find another candidate or the leader will have to find another way to gain their support.

He has already given concessions, including the motion to vacate the chair, in an unsuccessful bid to win their backing after heated meetings and negotiations. Congress cannot start official business until a Speaker is elected

Jordan nabbed six GOP votes in the first round, despite previously stating that he did not want the job.

“Let’s just say the next two years of a Republican Majority in the House will be a letdown for conservatives, again.”

I would be hard-pressed to disagree with you.

They can vote present. But they have to be careful that not too many of them do it or Jeffries becomes speaker.

Yep! We’ve got plenty of time. No rush stay in there and fight against this POS weasel. The moment our backs are turned he’s going to backstab us. EXACTLY Like all the rest of the wimp, spineless, weasel speakers of the past. Stand firm and FIGHT!

this is what i am curious about- if the repugnicans vote for jefferies, could he become the speaker in spite of the rinos holding the chamber? if anyone can get it, then jefferies already has a significant number behind him. 203 or something. If he just needs to get to 218 then he need only convince the liz-cheney-types to vote for him and the dems are back in power.

"A couple hours ago someone on RAV said that Scalise is BFF of Liz Cheney!!!"

I find that hard to believe. He was adamant about getting her removed from her leadership position.

lordy lordy, the uniparty/globalist preferred narrative isn’t going to plan, so it must be the end of the universe...

These folks need to relax..

They do realize the ACTUAL record for the number of votes to get a speaker is currently 133 right??

Just because this hasn’t happened in a while hardly makes it utter chaos and the end of the world.

If McCarthy is worthy of the post, he is going to need to be able to get folks in his party to come together, if he can’t figure out a way to get 15 more votes, then it kind of kills the argument he’s the best man for the job.

Micks are Irish. The congressional Mc’s might identify as Scot. But, whatever; I can’t stand the big Mc in the Senate and I can’t stand the big Mc in the House.

"But McCarthy will secure 218 with some Democrats votes..............."

If that happens, then you know he's already made concessions to the RATS.

I can’t help but notice that Repubs are always in “Chaos”
while the left is always in lock step...

Chaos is the natural state of the universe.
It’s just sad that canes and horse whips aren’t
allowed on the house floor.

A majority of those who vote for a candidate is required for election as Speaker, not a majority of the House(218).

“Two years without Congress would be pretty good!”

Yeah, I’m trying to think of a downside to that but I’m drawing a blank.

I agree, which is why I think Jordan would be horrible. Not that he’s not conservative, it’s he doesn’t want the damn job. Poor Ryan was forced to take it.

You are someone with wisdom.
