Tesla owners share videos of their cars failing in arctic freeze

Furious Tesla owners are blasting the company over how their high-end cars are not functioning in extreme weather, as the recent Arctic freeze left their door handles frozen shut and the electric vehicles unable to charge.

“Bet ya didn’t think of ice in the Tesla design,” Canadian meteorologist Rachel Modestino wrote alongside a now-viral video of her Tesla door handle refusing to budge. The footage was shared on Dec. 23, when temperates in Ontario hit a low of 5 degrees Fahrenheit.

Other Twitter users came to her aid and quickly shared some tips in the comments of her video, which has been viewed over 10 million times,

“Okay, this went off…Not meant to dig Elon (I love my car),” she replied to the influx of responses. “I learnt: unlatch capability, defrost longer, be less gentle with your 2nd baby & car covers. [Thank you] for the help, be kind, Merry Christmas.”

But Modestino was not the only Tesla owner left out in the cold over the weekend. Domenick Nati of Virginia was forced to cancel his holiday plans after his Tesla S failed to charge in the frigid temperatures.

“Two hours went by and not much changed,” the radio presenter told Business Insider of the Friday night ordeal, when temperatures hovered around minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

“It was very slow and the numbers got lower as the temperature dropped. Eventually, it stopped charging altogether.”

They hate Elon.

Yes, sorry I missed the sarcasm. Seems like the world has gone crazy in criticizing Elon Musk. I don't own a Tesla, but I do own stock and it is way down this year. It will turn around in January due to rapid growth and sales, unless Musk makes himself a target for criticism again.

I agree with you. A life of hard experience has taught me that travel in bad weather or over hazardous terrain needs special preparation and planning. A bad tire that goes flat on a sub-zero turnpike when you are wearing dress clothes taught me that overalls and a four point lug wrench were good things to carry in a car trunk.

Running out of any fuel is poor planning that must make the traveler look to their own failings and not bemoan others.

I have slept in an airport — twice. But I flew thousands of trips.

This will hurt Tesla’s stock price, which is down 20% in the last 7 days and is half of what it was one year ago. Worse than half

The Tesla one year slide is from $362 down to $121

“ Teslas are tested and work in extremes worse than this.”

Apparently they didn’t do the tests in Buffalo.

>> Freedom and liberty let’s us have what we like and appreciate.

Yes. Freedom and liberty! And so I’ll dream of the day when I won’t be forced by my government to hand over MY hard-earned money to subsidize EVs for YOUR well-off kid. ;-)

The first time I saw the handles, being in Michigan, I knew they’d be a problem. Your first thought has to be the extreme, like surviving an ice storm. Even less than that, fancy handles and any ice don’t mix.

I don’t know about the first one but the last one was without subsidy.

Just wait until they eliminate gas heating and force everyone onto 100% electricity in the home.

I just got into my garage after 6 days because of frozen doors, hard rain then flash freeze = lockout. No Christmas dinner everything in garage fridge.

Out in my shop during this cold snap. Maybe 25 degrees?

I noticed my lithium weed eater battery chargers had a blinking red light ( I keep them always charging).

On the charger it stated. Bilking red light, battery too cold. Cannot charge (or something to that effect).

Sorry, but door handles is an old problem and not related to power source.

And you best deal with it by pouring water over it (that goes for any freezing situation, too).

Now as to the charging problems, yes, that is a major issue dependent on the source of power!

Funny, because electricity (resistance) heat was never successful because it was too expensive! (Despite being very simple.)

Two comments (I read the article)

1) As far as door latches not working due to frozen shut. I have had MULTIPLE rental cars (regular gasoline) rented while in the frozen north (Minnesota) where I had to get warm water an pour over the door lock to be able to get into the car.

2) A sample size of ONE for not charging in extreme cold weather does NOT mean a design issue, it probably means the battery heater element is NOT working. If it was a design issue, it would have been all over many years ago (remember the really cold stretch last year)?

Are you a liberal or a conservative?
Conservatives vote with their feet (if they don’t like applesauce, the don’t eat it). Liberal facsist want to cancel, demean, get rid of anything they don’t agree with.

No one is forcing anyone to buy a tesla

A bad tire that goes flat on a sub-zero turnpike when you are wearing dress clothes...

I had a blowout of a rear tire on a highway, almost lost control of the car. Had to pull out the luggage to get to a spare tire and swap it while the kids watched. Dangerous on the side of the highway. Good news it wasn't cold, it was over 100 degrees. Oh, I have run out of gas - once. Stupid of me, we had to walk off the freeway to the nearest exit, scared that someone would plow into my car. My oldest was a toddler at the time, I gingerly held her low as we walked the side of a freeway overpass after midnight. We just got to the freeway exit and another driver pulled up and offered us a ride. I smelled a heavy odor of liquor and declined the offer! Hailed a taxi. Happened when young, we learn from our mistakes!

Tesla used to be one of a very few EV producers in the world. Now there are half a dozen with more coming, notably from Toyota, BYD, Ford and GM, with Hyundai and Kia to be offering models with interchangeable parts. With Tesla now at 28% market share, shortsellers have been actively gambling Tesla stock since Aug 2022 in anticipation of a further drop in market share as competition heats up in 2023/2024.

Almost all Tesla's start just fine in winter. And millions of ICE vehicles have failed in winter over the years.

Winter testing in New Zealand? Gimme a break! Real men test their cars in Canada...where -40 is common in winter.

Gee there sure have been a spate of negative Tesla stories lately. It’s almost as if the news is being massaged and manipulated. I wonder why?
