Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said former President Trump’s political power is “diminished” following his endorsed candidates’ lackluster performance in the midterm elections and vowed to find “quality” candidates for Senate races in 2024.
“Here’s what I think has changed: I think the former president’s political clout has diminished,” McConnell said in a interview with NBC News released on Friday.
Despite predictions of a “red wave” in this November’s midterm elections, Republicans lost ground in the Senate and only managed to secure a slim majority in the House. Many in the GOP have since placed the blame on Trump and the far-right candidates he supported.
“We lost support that we needed among Independents and moderate Republicans, primarily related to the view they had of us as a party — largely made by the former president — that we were sort of nasty and tended toward chaos,” McConnell told NBC.
“And oddly enough, even though that subset of voters did not approve of President Biden, they didn’t have enough confidence in us in several instances to give us the majority we needed,” he continued.
McConnell initially voiced concerns in August about Republicans’ chances in the Senate, pointing to a “candidate quality” issue in an apparent reference to the extreme candidates endorsed by Trump.

This is tiresome, tedious cope. Getting bored of the whining about stolen elections. I'd rather start winning again.
Senators that will Ditch Mitch
This is why the COS is so important. Given a successful convention, corrupt old bastards like China Mitch will not be able to spend 50 years in office sucking the American people dry like a blood sucking tick. He will be 81 Feb. 20, 83.
There wasn’t much to pick from.
He did get one thing right. We must pick quality candidates. Hopefully the clown show is over. Nobody bought enough tickets to have the show go on. Let’s finally take candidate recruitment seriously.
So do you think Gropin’ Joe really got 81 MILLION legitimate votes in 2020?
Dump the Mc’s; McConnell, McCarthy and McDaniel.
So mc will find candidates. What a joker
Perhaps this is why Churchill opined that democracy is the worst form government, apart from all the others and why he is reported to have said, America will do the right thing after it tries everything else. Eventually the voters get around to the right answer.
Finally, I am very leery of surrendering power to elitists even on the promise of saving us from the vast unwashed electorate. Therein lies path to tyranny -as we all have just so shockingly seen in the twitter /FBI collaboration up elitists.
Knowing these things, or rather believing these things, one must nevertheless concede that the electorate has been way off course the last two elections. I think I expressed my view as to what has caused voters to vote against their own best interests in my previous reply.
The temptation is to blame the electorate, blame the people. The temptation is to short cut the process, to go for a top-down solution rather than a bottom up remedy, to reach for the charismatic figure on horseback to ride to the rescue.
We must avoid these temptations and hold fast the truths that founded this Republic in the first place, ultimately to trust the people because there is no place else to go.
Good analysis, nathan.
There’s something on a different level that motivates Americans to vote Democrat:
They are aware that they are privileged people—to be here in the U.S., with its freedoms, to have more than enough in terms of material things, etc.—so the Dem vote is a guilt vote.
They think they are helping people less well off than they are, which of course they are not because they are leading them toward communism, in which there will be freedom.
Especially those who don’t bother to go to religious services anymore: Voting Democrat is their “charity.”
Well, it's falling.
GOPe endorsed RINO milquetoast candidates? F that.
will be no freedom
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) really needs to go meet the Lord and soon.
I am actively engaging in efforts to primary both Cotton and Boozeman from Arkansas.
If I still lived there, I’d run against them myself.
Are you serious? LMAO!
Was there blatant fraud in 2020? BECAUSE NOTHING WAS CHANGED SINCE THEN.
You have to deal with that, or you end up discussing a bunch of irrelevant shit that is an utter waste of time and energy.
You WILL ALWAYS get a corrupt person in every position of power in GA or PA, unless the fraud is addressed and fixed.
Do you get it? You’re not going to start winning again. EVER. until the fraud is dealt with
Can't argue with that.
like Murkowski?? Collins? Romney??
