London (AFP) – Britain's opposition Labour party vowed on Monday to scrap the unelected and "indefensible" House of Lords as part of a constitutional revamp to redistribute economic growth after Brexit.
Labour looks set to take power in the next election, due by January 2025, streaking far ahead of the governing Conservatives in opinion polls after a tumultuous period politically and economically.
Labour leader Keir Starmer promised "the biggest ever transfer of power from (the UK parliament in) Westminster to the British people", arguing that many voters in 2016 opted to quit the European Union because of a sense of lack of democratic control.
The party's blueprint for reform, drafted by former prime minister Gordon Brown, envisions new devolution to the UK's regions and countries including Scotland, where the nationalist government is pressing for a new referendum on independence.
Brown, who led the successful 2014 campaign for his fellow Scots to stay in the United Kingdom, proposed greater devolution, with the Edinburgh parliament included in international agreements that involve Scottish areas.
Addressing an audience in Leeds, northern England, Starmer said a "failure of economic growth over the past 12 years" under Conservative rule was caused in part by the UK failing as a whole to power growth, relying too much on London and southeast England.

The UK has the same problem we do.
The letter after a pol’s name means bugger all anymore.
A pol is either loyal to the citizenry or to Deep State.
The vast majority if the UK’s pols, like ours, are Deep State.
Abolishing the House if Lords isn’t going to change that.
But it makes a dandy distraction.
What the UK needs is a Trump.
NOW.
Well that’s a mistake.
The one, the few, and the many is the structure that leads to stable government and preserves Liberty.
The UK would probably be better run by the hereditary lords than it is now by the elected house of commons.
Another Harry trailer has come out. He wants to burn UK to the ground
The UK is now run by its Deep State.
Parliament is just its rubber stamp.
One thing often overly is that the Lords contains constitutional experts and Christian leaders (Lords Spiritual).
No ballot box process guarantees representation by either group. The job of the Lords isn’t to write law, it’s to spot bad laws.
What wrecks its raison detre is the peerage system being used for decades as a retirement home for loyal party hacks.
Actually, this is a Labour move I could well back, given how profoundly undemocratic the whole institution is.
And if Labour is destined to come back into power, better something like this come out of it than other reforms they might push.
Just what class do you think the globalists now screwing humanity and the planet come from?

There is no great love for Labor, it’s just that the ‘Conservatives’ have made total IDIOTS of themselves by destroying the UK by trying to ‘punish Russia’. Just fuel prices alone are pushing $500 per month, per household - thanks to them (and Europe) trying to ‘teach Russia a lesson’.
Nice work, ‘Conservatives’.
“Is now?”
What do you mean “is now?”
The first deep stater that Britain had would’ve at least been Ramsay MacDonald way back in 1924. You really need to learn more about what the Labour Party is and who the Fabians are.
