Top Senate Republican: Slash Social Security Or We'll Wreck US Economy
The National Memo ^ | 12/1/22 | Emily Singer

Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, the number two Republican in the U.S. Senate, said on Tuesday that the GOP plans to use the debt ceiling as leverage to make cuts to Social Security and other social safety net programs.

"There's a set of solutions there that we really need to take on if we're going to get serious about making these programs sustainable and getting this debt bomb at a manageable level before it's too late," Thune said in an interview with Bloomberg News, adding that raising the retirement age is one of the solutions Republicans want to explore.

I do not expect elected Republicans to push back much on anything anymore. As a nation, we have become a rudderless ship, captained by feckless men and women.

I just wish I could get them to stop sending me texts and emails asking for money...(now, apparently, more than ever)

Sounds good. Ending abortions and encouraging larger families would help.

sure its a ponzi scheme brought to us by whom? FDR 1935.

if they had taken receipts and bought interest paying treasury bonds it would be in better condition, and if inflation was not devaluing our money causing higher payouts than what was put in it would be in better shape.

congress is the culprit, not the workers.

you say you chose your job, (which included a set retirement age and now you want to change it) while others say you were foolish enough to trust the government and depend on SS when anyone could see it was unsustainable...you chose your retirement...cut out/down welfare and ssi, bloat of federal govt.uneccesary, unconstitutional agencies etc... lets see could the pandemic, the deadly vaccine and war against ivermectin etc, been part of the plan to kill millions on SS? our govt is either very stupid or very evil...

“our govt is either very stupid or very evil...”

I’m not discounting the possibility both are true...

I had no CHOICE about SS. They just took it. If I out that money in a good investment program, I would have gotten a lot more back

we are all in the same boat, but you COULD HAVE PUT MORE into a good investment program since everyone knew it was unsustainable...it was/is a “legally” forced ponzi scheme destined to fail from the git go, congress should be in jail.

Interesting point. This last general election for the first time I had almost more blanks on the ballot than filled in circles. Except for the passel of Judges that I voted for that in retrospect I should have also left blank.

To quote Senator Thune to my face, “Our hands are tied”. The question? Something about maybe sticking your neck out for We the People.
