Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, the number two Republican in the U.S. Senate, said on Tuesday that the GOP plans to use the debt ceiling as leverage to make cuts to Social Security and other social safety net programs.
"There's a set of solutions there that we really need to take on if we're going to get serious about making these programs sustainable and getting this debt bomb at a manageable level before it's too late," Thune said in an interview with Bloomberg News, adding that raising the retirement age is one of the solutions Republicans want to explore.

Lower the retirement age back to 65. Cut spending, cut immigration and taxes and let economy get back to full growth and wages will also go back up. SS is a cash cow. Seperate payrole taxes from the general income tax fund. Problem solved forever.

Raising the retirement age is the ultimate denial of benefits. It is political suicide too. And rightly so.
So, what is YOUR solution to the math problem?
Let the working people get something back for all their work over the years. Let's take all those on welfare and food stamps and get them to work so they can pay into the system instead of take out of it.
I don’t disagree that we shouldn’t be forced into it. What should be done (and should have been done a long time ago) is a gradual privatization of SS.
But we’re stuck with it, and we need to honor the commitments we made to those who paid into the system. They can start by trimming out those who never paid, and cutting back on other wasteful spending.
1. seperate parole taxes from the general tax fund.
2. get all non citizens off ss and ssi. Pass a law.
3. there may be shortfall until all the baby boomers kick off ( 20 years or so) but I think if step 2 is followed there would be no shortfall
4. go back to high growth policies, lower taxes, lower overall spending and CUT immigration.
5. tariff all imports a 5% and send to SS fund (est. $100B/yr )
