D.C.’s downtown is comatose. Here’s how to revive it.

The District is still stuck in a pandemic funk. Most days, the city, especially the core downtown blocks around the White House, looks more like a ghost town than a vibrant capital city. Before the coronavirus shutdown, visitors to Washington were often in awe of how many cranes punctuated the skyline. Now, it’s hard to find a building without a “for rent” sign. Coffee shops and restaurants are serving limited hours, if they’re open at all.

Hopes were high for a revival this fall. Schools reopened. Covid cases were way down. Businesses were calling their employees back. But the city has remained at about 45 percent of workers back in the office since Labor Day. That’s worse than New York, Chicago, Houston and the national average for major cities, according to data from the security firm Kastle Systems.

1: Remove the entire population.
2: Raze the entire district.
3: Bring in an octillion tons of clean fill dirt and bury the (literally) swamp.
4: Rebuild the infrastructure and buildings
5: Only let sane and honest people back in.

But I don’t know why anyone would want to bother

Sounds like downtown Trenton, downtown Harrisburg (just to name two state capitals I had the misfortune to visit in the recent past).

Ghost towns for businesses. All the money is hidden behind the marble walls of State.

How to fix? Carve off the residential areas and return them to Maryland. Re-define the District of Columbia to just the federal distract, the embassies, etc. Then, put the federal government in charge of the district, as it should be. Home Rule has been a total and absolute disaster (and I lived in the area for 19 years). Integrating the residential areas and what is left of commercial areas back into Maryland will allow for a total top-down reset to maybe start cleaning up the community.

They can’t move .gov out of DC because all the underground shelters are there for the elites.

In the case of nuclear war the peons get to stay above ground and enjoy the blast and radiation.

Re-define the District of Columbia to just the federal distract, the embassies, etc. Then, put the federal government in charge of the district, as it should be.

Problem with that is that they still get 3 electoral votes for the President. Even if Joe Biden and his wife are the only citizens of the district.

Can we get Congress, the Supreme Court and everyone in the White House to be comatose too? Our country would be even better for it.

I’m glad I retired two years ago and don’t have to go in everyday anymore. Last couple of times I went in to DC this year the place was comatose. If it wasn’t for the tourists, there wouldn’t be anyone around.

Why revive it. Let it whither like a Covid mandate.

the pandemic is a poor excuse for the failures of a democratic run city.

Burn it, raze the reminants, level the site, salt it thoroughly so nothing grows there again.
