A train from Los Angeles pulled into Cleveland with some $355,000 worth of items missing, according to a federal lawsuit.
A Hong Kong company, Orient Overseas Container Line, filed the lawsuit last month in federal court in Cleveland, saying the merchandise was pilfered from a Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway train somewhere in California.
The company accused the railroad company of negligence and breach of contract.
Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer reached out to Burlington Northern Santa Fe officials for comment.
Los Angeles has recently seen a barrage of theft from trains. Union and Pacific Railways estimated in January that thefts from its trains in Los Angeles jumped 160% in 2021. Photos of railyards show boxes and items strewn about.
The missing cargo was headed to Jenne Inc., an Avon technology distributor. The lawsuit does not say exactly what was taken.
The shipment arrived on Nov. 1, 2021, in Los Angeles in good order, according to the lawsuit.
When the train arrived in Cleveland, the container’s original seal had been opened and replaced, and nearly 200 cartons of containers were damaged or missing, the lawsuit said.
Burlington Northern Santa Fe denied a claim for the missing merchandise, the lawsuit said.

Moral of the story...Don’t ship by train. Put it on a truck at the port and move it across country that way.
The Railroad company could stop the theft if it wanted to.
That’s Warren Buffett’s rail company.
Welcome to the Biden Depression II. 2023 should be “fun” NOT.
The Leftists couldn’t get rid of President Trump fast enough to suit them.
Now we have this disaster since January, 2021.
Everyone knows the Los Angeles freight yards are a complete rip off. It is national news on a daily basis. So why is Warren Buffet refusing to contemplate reality?!
355 k from one boxcar. How many boxcars on one train? Who gets the ten percent to look the other way? Pols vs guards?
They need more Pinkerton men.
I’m pretty sure the truth is That the railroad company says to itself ;”well they have insurance and the insurance will pay for it”. I’ve heard that story and that tune many times over the years
We all need a few million "Judge Dred"
Bring back the caboose, but gun turrets on both sides.
Perhaps the unions are also encouraging it while negotiating their contracts?
Ooo! Ooo!
I see another federal ‘make work’ law enforcement agency in the making.
Just imagine, a new federal agency along the lines of the Transportation Security Administration with a couple hundred thousand incompent armed agents.
The Railway Security Administration.
Our new Railroad Po-Po
Now THAT’s a Great Train Robbery 😀
Interstate transport theft. Perhaps if the FBlie was not tied down fomenting crime and busting PTA meetings they would put some time on these matters.
I remember seeing a story about cargo thefts in LA., here’s a sampling. https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/whos-the-blame-la-da-gascon-fires-back-saying-union-pacific-doesnt-protect-its-cargo/2802271/
How Californians can put up with this is beyond me. The picture looks like a landfill as do many of the recent photos I see coming out of anyplace in California. Even feral dogs don’t soil their nests like feral humans. Beyond disgusting.
I hope every single shipper/merchant sues the state successfully.
This happens all the time, and not just in Ca, and not just in the yards. They hop on and toss stuff off to a chase vehicle along the way. Or they hit the cars when they are parked along the remote sidings because they were staged for some reason. Breakdowns, repairs and such.
It could be railroad employees because they feel they aren’t getting paid enough? Or folks out in CA that are just Christmas shopping.
Cordless grinders with cut wheels allow easy removal of locks, and catalytic converters. Modern technology has made thieves work much easier, and quicker.
actually, it is Africans seeking equality by theft
