Elon Musk says he'd consider 'alternative phone' if Twitter is booted from Apple and Google app stores

Musk said that he'd make an 'alternative phone' if there's 'no other choic

Twitter Chief Elon Musk says he'd consider making an "alternative phone" in the event that Twitter is removed from the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Musk made the comments on Friday night in response to conservative commentator Liz Wheeler, who tweeted, "If Apple & Google boot Twitter from their app stores, @elonmusk should produce his own smartphone. Half the country would happily ditch the biased, snooping iPhone & Android. The man builds rockets to Mars, a silly little smartphone should be easy, right?"

"I certainly hope it does not come to that," Musk replied, "but, yes, if there is no other choice, I will make an alternative phone."

Musk's comments come after Phil Schiller, an Apple fellow who's responsible for leading the App Store, deleted his Twitter account.

Yoel Roth, former head of trust and safety at Twitter, said in a New York Times op-ed that the social media giant risks being expelled from Apple and Google's app stores if they fail to adhere to guidelines.

"Failure to adhere to Apple’s and Google’s guidelines would be catastrophic, risking Twitter’s expulsion from their app stores and making it more difficult for billions of potential users to get Twitter’s services. This gives Apple and Google enormous power to shape the decisions Twitter makes," Roth said.

That's exactly how it works.

Nope.

You can't make smartphones with magic pixie dust. You still need rare Earth materials, and they ain't coming from the U.S.

Some come from the US, Australia and other countries. look it up. And Musk's Tesla manages to make and get all the EV batteries they want , more than any other company.

China has Africa on lock so it's going to come from them.

China has which African countries “on lock”?
Please elaborate.

All Apple/Google has to do is tell China don't partner with Musk.

You actually think Apple or Google can order Xi about?
When has anybody ever ordered XI to do what they want?

Just like the “Trust Sessions” nonsense you spouted here years ago.
I would not bet against Musk.
But then again, you have a History of making wrong predictions.
If Musk decides to do it, he will find away to make it work.
And remember EEE, “Trust Sessions”.

> He should buy the Microsoft Phone software from Nokia and update it.

Arrrgghhhhh! Had a Microsoft OS phone and HATED IT. ;-) I _believe_ Microsoft bought Nokia phone OS stuff for the patents. MOF, the place where I used to work was across the hall from Nokia’s team for location services (former Tom Tom) (or whatever they called it), we took over the lease for the office space after MS shut them down.

Musk has been making vague references to a phone for years

He hasn't.

Nothing has ever come of it. Just like so many of his fake electric car boasts.

“false EV boasts”?
Like Tesla being by far the biggest EV maker/seller in America and easily crushing GM/Ford in EV sales?

I wish Blackberry was still around. Some hated their OS, but I liked it.

The Blackberry OS was the best ever...it would be awesome to see Tesla come out with a secure, Blackberry-like device, complete with a physical keyboard.

That's more for commercial or governmental operations. It's not for us plebes.

Its for the masses.
You obviously did not watch the SpaceX/T Mobile presentation.

US taxes and regulations say otherwise.

Contract manufacturers in South East Asia depend on Us Tax payers huh?
How so?

Over 90% of all smartphones are made in Taiwan or China. If they're made in India, it's probably the flip phones from the late 90s.

Neither of that is true.

I don’t believe they’re going to ban Twitter from their app stores; they’re smart enough to know how stupid and petty it would be and appear.

I’m a retired programmer (They called me, officially, a “Senior Lead Software Engineer,” but, well, that’s just a pay grade, not management. I was just a pretty good programmer). Made a good living in Windows DB software, but since retirement I have luxuriated in the “Apple Ecosystem.” My wife and I have 2 iPhones, 3 MacBooks (2 Pro 1 Air), and 2 iPads, and love the interaction they share. There’s just nothing else available that compares favorably.

I hate the company and its pinko management, but the same applies to Microsoft, Google, and most of the rest. I love Apple products, though. Sigh.

This (the perceived AppStore threat) is not much of an issue, though. You can use Twitter just fine in your browser, whichever of the many options you use. This brouhaha is just the next verse in the libs’ little tantrum. They’ll be trying to defenestrate someone else next week.

That said, if Musk, or Starlink, or Tesla makes a smartphone, I’m gonna have to have one, just because!. It will be great.

You could be right. But then its always good to make emergency plans when you are dealing with fat left Big Tech.
Musk could study/talk to the guy at Gab to see how how survived after having Gab removed from the app stores.

If you forked the Android project then you would no longer be depending on Google for the updates.

A fork is a starting point. The two projects would diverge over time to the point they were no longer compatible and become two different operating systems.

This should scare Google. They could potentially lose control of Android (and thus unable to install spyware on it).

This happened to OpenOffice (which was an open source version of Sun’s StarOffice). It was forked to another open source project: LibreOffice. The two grew apart and LibreOffice has became more popular.

I gave up on Apple many years ago for various reasons. I like my Android just fine and it was a fraction of the price!

I’d back him too. They should be afraid…very afraid, even if they have the power of China behind them.

A lot of us (including lots of Chinese in China, if they could) would support him..

“…. I’d back Musk in any fight with Apple, any day any time.”
*************************************************************

I have seen no reason why Apple would fight with Musk.

Some come from the US ROFL. There is a complete and utter ban on rare Earth mining in the US. Even conventional mines takes up to a decade for approval. Trust me, even Xi will cave when Apple or Google will demand that his country not partner with Musk. The logistics aren't there for Musk to begin his own smartphone line.

A 3rd party phone platform would need developers to make applications for it.

That won’t be easy to do.

Any new phone platform would have to at least be compatible with Android or iPhone apps.

If Musk decides to do it, he will find a way

He's clearly bluffing. Have you not played poker? Musk doesn't have the infrastructure to make his own smartphones.

Fine by me. Android is garbage. My Windows phones just worked.
