StarPhone

Hmmm.

I loved my old Samsung flip phone but 2g was discontinued.

I liked my Nokia MSFT phones, but they were also made redundant.

Probably would not buy a musk phone

Google and Apple should be worried, very worried.

Google is the reason I use Apple...the only reason.

I'll switch in a heartbeat and I don't do Twitter.

Android is open source.

Musk could fork Android and make the initial phone compatible with current Android apps.

Amazon’s Fire is forked Android. They have crippled the Fire devices by (1) locking users into Amazon’s app library and (2) using substandard hardware. This is why their Fire phone failed.

Other companies have tried forking Android also, but they didn’t have the marketing to make it work.

It's not going to happen folks.

We have a ban on mining raw rare Earth materials here in the U.S. that are used to make the phones, and the taxes alone would make Musk think twice.

All the smartphones are made in China or Taiwan. All Google or Apple execs have to do is make one phone call ordering them not to make Musk phones or they're pulling out.

I really wish we could get more Linux phones around here.

Why are we waiting on Musk though? Shouldn’t we do it ourselves?

Oh for the love of God please no. Can we stop relying on big government for a change? Please?

Android is Linux based. It’s also open source. Anyone could fork the project today.

Amazon’s Fire is a fork of Android.

I wish Blackberry was still around. Some hated their OS, but I liked it.

Android is open source.

Amazon’s Fire tablets are a fork of Android.

He could literally have an Android based phone (not associated with Google) up and running tomorrow.

That's not how i works.
SpaceX was already working on a satellite smartphone with T Mobile, even before Musk took over Twitter. There was a Musk event with the T mobile CEO a few months back.
As for contractors to make a smartphone, they are a dime a dozen and not just in China.
Smartphones are made in India, Korea and other Asian countries as well.

He should buy the Microsoft Phone software from Nokia and update it. The absolute best user interface ever. Microsoft, as is often the case, gave up on it. Had two of them and loved them.

This is a bluff by Musk, and a good one.

Musk is using the same “crazy person” negotiating tactic President Eisenhower used to end the Korean war. “Will I drop an atom bomb on North Korea? I’m not saying. You’ll find out when I’m in office.”

The North Koreans came to the negotiating table the moment Ike was elected. They couldn’t take the risk that he was crazy enough to actually drop the bomb on them.

Apple & Google can’t take the risk that Musk would do this just for fun. The guy just burned $44 billion on Twitter not for profit but because he wanted to do it. He builds rockets as a hobby. He’s willing to burn big bucks on longshots.

That's not how i works.

That's exactly how it works. You can't make smartphones with magic pixie dust. You still need rare Earth materials, and they ain't coming from the U.S. China has Africa on lock so it's going to come from them. All Apple/Google has to do is tell China don't partner with Musk.

SpaceX was already working on a satellite smartphone with T Mobile, even before Musk took over Twitter.

That's more for commercial or governmental operations. It's not for us plebes.

As for contractors to make a smartphone, they are a dime a dozen and not just in China.

US taxes and regulations say otherwise.

Smartphones are made in India, Korea and other Asian countries as well.

Over 90% of all smartphones are made in Taiwan or China. If they're made in India, it's probably the flip phones from the late 90s.

Android is open source.

While technically true, in practice it is far from it. Nearly all of the core updates come from Google.

He should just buy an existing manufacturer like Nokia or HTC.

Musk has been making vague references to a phone for years. Nothing has ever come of it. Just like so many of his fake electric car boasts.
