New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on Monday that lawmakers will be asked to vote on lowering the voting age from 18 to 16 following a top-level court decision.
The country's Supreme Court ruled on Monday that not allowing 16 and 17-year-olds to vote amounted to discrimination, in line with New Zealand's Bill of Rights.
Ardern said that she supported the move, but campaigners admit that it will be difficult to get the 75% support needed from lawmakers to pass the legislation.
The court's ruling means that parliament must discuss the issue, but it does not oblige parliament to change the voting age.
Protection against discrimination in New Zealand begins at 16 which ultimately led the Supreme Court to side with campaigners who argued that since 16-year-olds can drive and pay taxes, they should also be able to vote.
Several other countries, such as Austria, Brazil and Cuba, already allow voting from the age of 16, while other countries are debating lowering their voting age.

The franchise should always be limited to those who have some maturity and life experience.
It should be limited to those who have a stake in the outcome.
Those who do not have a stake in maintaining a stable society are a threat to everyone else.

Wisdom? How many 16 year olds know the meaning of the word? How about 40 year olds? Wisdom is completely underrated and undervalued.
What could go wrong?
And in doing so they stopped being a real country.
Re: property owners only
For property tax and zoning issues, I agree.
However, those of us who deliberately avoid the burden of home ownership, and for business owners who rent, we would prefer not to be disenfranchised on all the other political issues.
They voted a borderline Communist female into office.

I know some Kiwis, they seem nice. But they don’t live in NZ anymore.
I wouldn’t have an issue with women property owners above 21 with no felony convictions voting.
Being a property owner, a fully formed adult and being law abiding means you have a steak in the system, pay into the system and have an interest in making sure society is safe and lawful.
Because 16 year olds make such good choices. 🙄
And the franchise should only be granted to citizens who were born citizens or who legally immigrated to the country.

A person age 16 might vote for a popular pop singer with no serious background in public affairs.
Ridiculous.
NZ’s trip down the rabbit hole started years ago when they voted in a government that disbanded the armed forces, leaving only a skeletal coast guard/sar cadre.
They are 100 percent dependent on Australia, the Commonwealth and America for ALL defensive needs.
First they should remove the ranking voting system it keeps that Commie in power
