Twitter CEO Elon Musk posted a poll on the platform on Friday to ask users if they believe former President Trump’s account should be restored.
Twitter permanently suspended Trump’s account in the aftermath of the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection following tweets he made that the company determined to be in violation of its policy against glorifying or inciting violence. But Musk, who completed his acquisition of the company last month, has indicated a hesitancy to continue Trump’s suspension and a general opposition to lifetime bans.
Musk commented on the poll, “Vox Populi, Vox Dei,” a Latin phrase meaning “the voice of the people is the voice of God.”
He said earlier on Friday that he has not yet decided whether to restore Trump’s account.
Musk additionally said that the platform’s policy will be “freedom of speech, but not freedom of reach.” He said tweets that spread hate speech will be “deboosted & demonetized” but still available for anyone who seeks them out.

That said, Musk is going through a very dangerous phase at Twitter. He has to obliterate the existing culture at Twitter without destroying the parts he wants to keep and build on.
Just running a poll doesn't mean he doesn't intend to reinstate Trump. Keep in mind that he is involved in a massive staff turnover. He might be merely trying to confuse those remaining Twitter employees who are vulnerable to Musk haters.
Whatever Musk is, he is a very clever operator. He has been through hell many times and doesn't mind sailing close to the rocks if it gets him where he wants to be.
Trump doesn’t need to be on twitter.
Over 8 million votes so far...
@elonmusk
Reinstate former President Trump
YES 53%
NO 47%
He could just mirror his Truth Social posts on Twitter for more audience.
Hasn’t Trump said he won’t go back on Twitter?
I wondered why he didn’t restore Trump immediately.
But this is probably brilliant marketing. Free publicity.
If Twitter is honestly going to try to be a forum for free speech (and that's good for America), it would be good for Trump to be on Twitter.
At least that's my opinion. Yours may differ (free speech and all).
And MAGA isn't just about Trump, it's more about his supporters and their issues (or at least it should be).
A poll is an election. And nothing gets people more fired up than an election.
Trump has said he doesn’t plan to go back to Twitter. He owns Truth Social, so he shouldn’t. But I use Twitter a lot and can tell you that its important to Trump’s followers there that his account be reinstated. Whether he uses it or not is his prerogative.
Late Thursday, the Drive-By establishment went with a story that “indispensable” Twitter staff were leaving and the entire twittersphere would seize up.
Didn’t happen. As the saying goes, the graveyards are full of “indispensable” people.
Elon, saying should Trump be reinstated as President...
Many of us have been at companies where "indispensable" staff (and even whole departments) quit...and everything just kept on running fine.
It’s the principle
“The graveyards are full of ‘indispensable’ people.”
Never heard that before, but it sure is. True.
I’ve read over there that this may be a bot mining operation. Post a “controversial” poll and dig up fake accounts. Who knows?
Also very revealing how many Americans are anti-free speech. 47% as of this a.m.
Very true. I have heard that from many corporate and factory managers.
"No one is indispensable."
In fact, usually, when you've got someone who believes he's indispensable, he's costing you more than he's worth...and he's probably causing trouble by stirring up other employees.
On the other hand, if and when your boss tells you that you are indispensable, it has a wonderful ring to it.;-)
Agreed. It did not help him in anyway as President.
“Trump has said he doesn’t plan to go back to Twitter.”
Too bad. The people who need to hear his message most likely are on Twitter. They’re definitely NOT on Truth Social.
Twitter is not just used by Americans…..
