B-17 bomber and a smaller plane collide at Dallas airshow
Wow, folks are right.
That was nasty.
The small plane pilot suffered from the same problem that
motorcycle guys experience when doing wheelies. They
block their own view.
The pilot’s wing was up, and he didn’t see the other
aircraft.
I didn’t expect to see the damage to the B17 be that
severe.
I don’t see anyone walking away from that situation.
So sad for them, their families, friends, church and
business associates.
An otherwise great day, turns on this event. What
a terrible outcome.
No, his nose was up to turn and it obscured his line of sight. He probably saw him earlier, but lost him or was looking for the other plane.
Confederate AF! LOL Sure wish it still was.
Someone else tagged it as some Texas thing.
Oh, for crying out loud! The smaller airplane was a P-51, which is an interceptor. It can do a loop around a B-17.
On top and upper sides.
Anywhere else, airplanes generally stink with visibility and seem to be highly reliant on outside input, old or new.
The P-51 was designed to do that sort of thing. Such an approach would be normal for an intercept.
That video shows much more. The small plane was above the B-17 and never saw it.
Ok. I can’t tell. I just see the shape of the little airplane. Nothing to make me think a certain type or model. It looked pretty strange.
Commemorative Air Force is a newer PC name for same group named Confederate Air Force.
There could have been up to 10 paying passengers on the B17. Just awful.
Is the smaller plane not a Spitfire?
Doubly bad because it’s usually old geezer patriots piloting and on board. Prayers and hoping for the best!
What else? Arkancide comes to mind.
.
Some of the comments on this thread just have me shaking my head.
.
Not the P-51. The pilot can see down about 45 degrees in front of the wings. Just look at this picture:
If you wag the wings you get a clear view everywhere below you. This was designed for dog-fighting. It couldn't be blind.
I know.
I was out in AZ when they were still Confed and still HQ there. Very cool watching them prep a B17 up close.
Which ones in particular?
It was a Bell P-63 Kingcobra that hit the B-17.
Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and a Bell P-63 Kingcobra per news reports.
A Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and a Bell P-63 Kingcobra collided and crashed at the Wings Over Dallas Airshow at Dallas Executive Airport in Texas around 1:20 p.m. local time Saturday. At this time, it is unknown how many people were on both aircraft. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate. The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will provide additional updates. After investigators verify the aircraft registration numbers at the scene, the FAA will release them (usually on the next business day) on this webpage. You can look up the aircraft by their registration numbers on this webpage. Neither agency identifies people involved in aircraft accidents.
