How Gov. Gavin Newsom survived a recall election and then sailed through to victory in Tuesday’s midterm elections is a whole other issue to be discussed.
Right now, Americans need to worry about what the passing of Proposition 1 means for unborn babies’ lives in California.
Prop 1., would allow women to receive an abortion up until the time of birth, or when the baby is viable, meaning there are no limitations for when an unborn baby’s life could be cut off.
“We have governors that won their re-elections tonight in other states that are banning books, that are banning speech, that is banning abortion,” Newsom said following his victory, adding “And here we are in California moving in a completely different direction… that’s a deep point of pride.”
State lawmakers introduced the measure following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, stating that California “shall not deny or interfere with an individual’s reproductive freedom in their most intimate decisions, which includes their fundamental right to choose to have an abortion and their fundamental right to choose or refuse contraceptives.”
Additionally, Vermont and Michigan also approved the resolution following Tuesday’s election results.
In Michigan the measure would invalidate previous laws that forbid the prosecution of anyone for seeking, getting, or performing an abortion.
Pro-lifers slammed the passing of the measure as “extreme,” calling it a threat to life.
I voted no on 1.
RE: I voted no on 1.
Unfortunately, there are just not enough of voters like you in California.
Same here as did at least a dozen friends.
What should have been a wave election is a pathetic dribble because single women broke by 36 points for the Dems.
By putting the issue on the ballot directly the Dems drove turnout in states like Michigan.
A lot of these bills are performative. Abortion was already legal in 6 out of 7 states. But the single ladies want to show grrl power, and they did.
The spectacle of Walkers problems with the issue show it's an effective wedge issue even in more Conservative states.
The Dems are thrilled with this issue, and look forward to fighting it state by state for the next 20 years, using it keep there voters motivated.
We will lose what little is left of our Constitutional Republic in the process.
We don't kill the most vicious criminals on death row in this manner. How sick! God help us!
There was an article here that said the new law accidentally meant that you can only get an abortion up till the time of viability.
Why are you repeating Democrat propaganda?
How come single women broke that much for clinton?
So we have to do whatever the Democrats want on every issue?
First century birth control.
It’s not Democrat propaganda. And it’s not just single women. Step out of your bubble and talk to women who are not evangelicals.
In my wife’s circle of friends, even normally Republican women were upset at the prospect of “losing control of their own bodies”.
This is a real issue with women. Not necessarily to third trimester, but in many places around the country if you are perceived as wanting to ban abortion entirely, then they will be upset on a philosophical level.
I’m disgusted Prop. 1 won, that 2/3 of the voters approved it. Seriously? I think a bunch of people screamed “Freedom” (from consequences of sexual behavior) and ran fast to mark their ballots.
We were making progress nibbling away at abortion, reducing availability of second and third trimester abortions. As long as first trimester and actually-medically-necessary (pregnancy complications putting mother at risk) were still available, then we stayed below the threshold of upsetting women.

I think a lot of women didn’t understand all the ramifications of what they were voting for. Then again most voters never do think that much.

Thanks for posting this. It's an interesting view, to look at this on a philosophical level. I think there are a number of women out there who would never dream of themselves having an abortion but who support that option out of some abstract principle, or on behalf of some imagined woman they've never met or never will meet, that she should have that option.
"We all live in a harsh world. But at least I know I do." -- Tom Branson to Lord Grantham, Downton Abbey.
It's a harsh world indeed where a woman would feel compelled to support that option. We don't live in a genteel or chivalrous society, where a man is expected to show responsibility and restraint, and be accountable for his actions. Given that, it's understandable for women to circle the wagons, so to speak, on this issue.
This makes me laugh, women SO UPSET about losing control of their own bodies UNLESS OF COURSE the government DEMANDS they take an experimental vaccine THEN they are ALL ON BOARD what damn morons!!!
My (adult) daughter, who is quite conservative (and who voted Republican), feels this way. It’s a real problem.
Be upset if you want. This was an actual wedge issue which Democrats spent the entire election cycle being hyper focused on. It motivated a bunch of women, who might have stayed home, to show up and vote against Republicans.
Many celebrated the decision to overturn Roe on moral grounds. What it actually accomplished was to bring abortion back as a big political issue. And a political issue which drives us to lose.
It is now a demonstrated fact of life that for every Christian who is passionate against abortion, there are MORE feminists who are just as passionate FOR allowing access to abortion. Maybe not for themselves, maybe they are past the age where it matters, but in solidarity with other women.
