The problem with it being a constitutional amendment is that you cannot try to get something changed by a piece of legislation or a court case decision because “that’s against the constitution which guarantees the right of the abortionist” and so on.
The Michigan amendment discussion included someone who said they are certain the Dems already have test cases and phony injured parties ready to bring in as they did with homosexual “marriage” and gay rights. That sets it all in stone as “the constitution says....”.
