Victory for ‘true Maga warriors’ would tighten Trump grip on Republican party

The spectre of Donald Trump’s imminent declaration of a new White House run looms over races in several key states ahead of Tuesday’s US midterm elections, with the former president poised to seize on any success for ultra-conservative candidates as validation for his 2024 campaign.

Opinion polls appearing to reflect a last-minute surge of support for Trump-endorsed nominees in a number of crucial congressional and governors’ contests came as the former president appeared at a rally for the Republican senator Marco Rubio in Florida on Sunday.

Heaping praise on “an incredible slate of true Maga warriors”, Trump cited his “Make America Great Again” political slogan.

Some of his preferred extremists, including Kari Lake in Arizona, Herschel Walker in Georgia and JD Vance in Ohio, have erased Democratic leads to reach election day as favorites, according to the polling website FiveThirtyEight.

Other Trumpist Republicans who once trailed by double digits, including the Senate candidates Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania and Blake Masters in Arizona, have closed to within touching distance, giving their party hope of recapturing the chamber and providing Trump a significant lift as he prepares to declare his third run for the Republican presidential nomination.

“If this is a big night for Republicans, and they think it’s going to be, that will be a major, major victory for Donald Trump and his followers will be greatly energized,” David Gergen, a White House adviser to four presidents, told CNN.

“If they come up with anything like that kind of victory, if they turn two or three of the seats in the Senate, they control the House, it’s going to be hard to stop Trump within the Republican party. He will be, in effect, the very likely nominee.”

Gotta love when a British socialist paper tries to comprehend why conservatives are surging in a US election. I’m surprised I didn’t see the word “Nazi” or “KKK” in the first couple paragraphs.

I’d watch the Ohio rally if I were you….
From Richard Grenell a little while ago on Twitter. He seems to be hinting that tonight Trump will announce. I’d go but have to get up to be at the polls to work at 5am tomorrow. I’ll definitely be watching.

I believe that the MAGA movement is Trump’s greatest achievement. What an incredible bench we are developing for the future.

Under the radar maybe is the fact that pubbies may pick up a number of State governorships. With control, Republican governors can make a huge difference in electing the next president in 2024. If nothing else, governors can help reduce election fraud by working with State legislatures.

The problem is that Trump thinks it’s all about Trump.

He should remember Churchill, who didn’t just take credit for winning WWII for the Brits (which he did) and retire a hero. Instead, he wanted to hang onto his position when he should actually have moved on to being an honored and inspiring elder statesman.

Churchill didn’t do that but instead thought...aided by his wife, sound familiar? ...that he needed to hang onto power.

He was simply too old, didn’t succeed, and that’s why the Brits ended up launched onto the path of Socialism.

The conservative movement is bigger than Trump, but he needs credit for making it coalesce. And now he should step back and be the inspirational figure and let younger, more aggressive folks take over.

I don’t care what Trump believes, as long as he’s an effective vessel for doing what I (speaking for myself as a conservative) want to see done.

When he is no longer effective I will look for someone who can be. But I think Trump is still the guy.

IIRC, David Gergen is related to Hillary. Not direct blood, but tangentially. That’s why Limbaugh used that term.

“David Gergen is related to Hillary. Not direct blood, but tangentially. That’s why Limbaugh used that term.”

I couldn’t remember the reason. But I thought it was hilarious at the time. It thoroughly belittled Gergen, who’s opinions are worthless.

“The conservative movement is bigger than Trump, but he needs credit for making it coalesce. And now he should step back and be the inspirational figure and let younger, more aggressive folks take over.”

I understand your argument. The other side is that R’s (including Trump) take presidential office naive and ready to trust the good folks who have been in government for decades. I’ve seen it happen over and over in my life. For example, the deep state took down Flynn, Trump’s most savvy and aggressive advisor, almost immediately by undermining him with Trump and Trump let it happen out of newness and naivete.

Trump was betrayed and maneuvered into corners by the Senior Executive Service over and over during his term. He will come to office again with no learning curve in that regard. It could be an incredibly productive four years.

So now there are seemingly good guys like DeSantis who might step right into Trump’s shoes. But DeSantis is endorsed by Jeb Bush, Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney. Who will he listen to if elected — us voters, Trump, or Romney? How do we know DeSantis is as open-eyed cynical about the Senior Executive Service and ready to kick down walls and turn over buildings as Trump?

The folks in SES didn’t get there by seeming like a$$holes you have to get rid of right away. They got there by charming, worming their way into confidence, and then twisting the knife in anyone who did not further the power and money of the deep state. See, eg, Rosenstein, McCabe, and many others. Trump knows them for who they are from hands-on experience. That is a not inconsiderable virtue.
