The climate crisis is the biggest story of our time. So why isn’t the entertainment industry acting like it?
You’d think liberal Hollywood types — with their Teslas and vegan diets and eco-friendly beauty products — would be chomping at the bit to tell stories about climate. But despite a few high-profile examples — such as “Don’t Look Up” — global warming is largely absent from nearly all the TV shows and movies being produced today, according to a new report out of USC.
It’s a collective failure of epic proportions — not just for human civilization, but also for TV and film audiences.
“As the crisis worsens and more Americans gain first-hand experience to climate change, stories that do not acknowledge climate will begin to feel irrelevant or divorced from reality,” the report states. “Telling climate stories is not just good for the planet, it is in the best interest of an industry that seeks to engage audiences through authentic characters and narratives.”
As a journalist deep in the climate trenches — and a young person concerned for my own future — I agree that we need climate stories on our screens to help people understand what’s happening and motivate them to fight for solutions.
At the same time, the idea of such a scary topic working its way into my entertainment is, well, kind of scary. As much as some folks loved “Don’t Look Up,” I didn’t especially enjoy it. It made me feel gloomy. Do I really want or need more of that?

Exactly, Water World was a failure.
Propaganda is what the Ad Council is for.
I have no idea.....
because man-made global warming is the biggest LIE of our time! And they should make more movies about that instead!
Patrick Moore is an actual scientist, the only scientist founder of Greenpeace, the group who stopped atmospheric nuclear testing in Alaska & French Polynesia & got whaling banned worldwide. He departed from Greenpeace when its non-scientist majority board, taken over by money grubbing leftists, decided to start a campaign to outlaw chlorine—you know, as in sodium chloride, table salt, a necessary component for life.
Moore notes that over a geographically short 5 million year span, atmospheric CO2 averages about 175, a devastating low. If it plunges to 135, all life on earth perishes.
Climate Alarmists are today’s witch hunters.
Unbelievable BS. Correction: Entirely predictable.
Example: I’ve lost count as to how many programs/movies deliberately gaslight on the topic.
The latest:
I enjoy documentaries on natural disasters. When the netflix miniseries “Earthstorm” came up I enjoyed it...until the tornado & hurricane episodes which parroted the same, tired meme...right to the VERY LAST narration (I gritted my teeth to watch all of it).
There’s only one way to punish such entities, but when they’re supported by the self-reinforcing delusion (the left) such effects are muted. I’ve told my wife that I would like to see netflix go away...now more than ever. But I have little confidence my individual action would accomplish anything at all, especially in the face of continued persecution under ‘misinformation’; we can only hope that Musk’s efforts aren’t for naught and that meta’s shareholders hold the idiots accountable.
The left is organized; we are not, in part due to continued affront/attack by the left’s soldiers in certain 3-letter agencies.
It may already be too late on multiple fronts. From my chair, ALL of their agenda is now in play.
And now in my own state we are faced with passage of Measure 114 which effectively blocks the sale of firearms.
Check (mate?).
Just looked it up...David Lee Roth was with Van Halen...
No I didn’t. Wasn’t it kind of gross?
Serious question, but can anyone give me one example of a climate or environmental catastrophe that the media or politicians have predicted correctly?
I’ve seen tons of articles that outline the countless times they’ve gotten it wrong, but I (personally) don’t know if anyone’s ever gotten it right.
It’s probably the question the GOP candidates should be asking the lunatic Left-wingers in debates.
Load of horse shat
Sammy, the whole thing is a LIE.
Yes, the climate changes, and yes, the Earth has slightly warmed a little.
BUT—It isn’t humans causing it.
Until you can show actual data and not models of what may be, you have nothing.
Stopping fossil fuels won’t stop climate change, but will kill millions of humans who value their lives as much as you and the Hollywood elites value their own.
If you really cared, you’d give yourself a bullet to the temple to lessen man’s impact by one human—yourself.
Then Sammy Hagar replaced him, I just find it curious he used that for a pen name.
What’s left of them
David Lee Roth /= Sammy Hagar.
I don’t watch movies anymore because there’s just not enough leftist propaganda embedded in them.
There was a time when I would have worried that words like these could undermine my credibility as a journalist. Here I was expressing my own fears, and my own desire for climate solutions. Wouldn’t that make me look biased? Wouldn’t I be better off sticking to the facts, explaining the scientific consensus in a traditional, third-person newspaper voice, and leaving the politics to climate activists?
After eight years of writing about energy, I’ve come to see my responsibilities in a different light.
In the same way that journalists ought to be comfortable denouncing systemic racism and pushing politicians to tackle homelessness, we need to get comfortable with decrying the horrors of the climate crisis and demanding solutions....
It’s great that so many reporters have ditched the damaging “both sides” approach to climate coverage—quote a denier on one side and a scientist on the other. But acknowledging that carbon emissions are heating the planet isn’t enough anymore, if it ever was. We have a responsibility to tell stories that prompt businesses and government to reduce emissions, quickly and dramatically. We can do that by holding politicians and industry accountable when they fail to act, and by using plain language to describe the political and economic realities—without worrying about bad-faith critics.
“...The left is organized; we are not...”
Reason being the left believes in collectivism, communism, group think...
Conservatives believe in individualism, responsibility, patriotism...
Most all have hints of Leftism, it's hard to avoid when everyone involved in the production is a Leftist.
Sammy Roth just came from a seminar: “Push leftie ideas at every opportunity all the time.”
Missing my point and/or rationalizing, you are.
smh
