I heard that the Aussies built Canberra because they thought if the capital was in Sydney, it would be unfair to Melbourne, and vice-versa. What if we recognized one of the two older cities as the capital of Australia?

I made a prosaic observation, whereupon you said I "accused" Israel, as if I had said something horrid. I'd call that a hypersensitive reaction.

Had I said the same about any other nation's dealings with China, my comment would have raised no hackles from anyone.

Yes; you said Israel had “close relations” with Red China (characterizing it as an alliance with great depth, implying that Israel is an enemy of the USA since Red China is, via such “close relations”)—and then you changed it to “business dealings” when pressed on it. That’s accusatory, in the first case; anything but prosaic. By claiming that responses are “hypersensitive” says that you were expecting responses that would criticize your characterization of Israel/Red China relations, indeed.

Again, the USA has “business dealings” with Red China, but does that constitute “close relations”? And frankly (and tragically), so does Australia—and their present stance on Israel’s capital reflects how deeply Red China has dug into Australia’s sovereign politics.

I never said, nor even "implied" that Israel is "an enemy of the USA." Such an "implication" stems from your hypersensitive imagination.

Again, the USA has “business dealings” with Red China, but does that constitute “close relations”?

Sure it does. And so what?

So Israel also has close relations with China. Again, so what? Only in your hypersensitive mind does saying so translate into an accusation that Israel is an enemy of the U.S.

My point was simply that China is on good terms with Israel, and thus has no reason to pressure Australia on where Israel's capital might be. (The topic of this thread.) Any other implication is in your imagination.

But you did, when you said Israel and Red China had “close relations”. I can certainly take you to mean that you had not intended to say that, but your defensiveness seems to express something else, particularly when you come up with “so what” now when your initial post inquired as to why China was being suspected.

I would not define the USA’s “business dealings” with Red China as “close relations”, although they certainly are close to our leftist politicians—as the case is no doubt in Israel, and, as this thread illustrates, is the case in Australia.

Wong is part of the Labor government. An elected senator from the state of South Australia. The Senate is the upper chamber of our bicameral system as per the U.S. The Prime Minister appoints ministers usually based on party factions ie the Foreign Minister, equivalent to your Secretary of State, must be a member of Parliament, unlike in the U.S.
Sadly milk bars are a a dying thing. Maybe find one in a country town, but seldom in the inner cities, where they were once common.
The famous Newcastle Song setting was outside the Parthenon Milkbar in Hunter Street, Newcastle NSW. It no longer exists, but fortunately the song immortalises it. Many an American serviceman got a shake at the Parthenon. And maybe a Chiko Roll. Be sure to youtube the Newcastle Song for some classic Australiana

Might be the 1949 recognition wasn’t even valid, because they were part of the British Commonwealth at the time, so if the UK hadn’t recognized Israel at that time, the Australian recognition is suspect, too.

The UK recognized Israel de facto and de jure in 1949 and 1950 so that's a weak defense. Besides, Australia recognizes Israel, and it's capital Tel Aviv. Kangaroo power gives them the right to determine another countries capital. Rather arrogant. Israel should name Alice Springs as the capital of Australia.

But not at the time that Australia had. Sir Winston had to goad them into it.

Jerusalem was Israel’s capital over three thousand years ago. Australia was an untamed wilderness.

Looks like you got me. I did read a different version back about 40 years ago, and recalled it, but it was inaccurate.

I don't think we even belong on the same website.

Concur; FR would be better off without haters of Israel calling Israel Nazi.

Off topic, but...There’s another called “And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda”, a horrors-of-war song about the WWI Aussie assault on Gallipoli. I sang it at our local pub’s Irish session a while back.
