Wellington (AFP) – New Zealand on Tuesday unveiled plans to tax the greenhouse gas emissions from farm animals, in a controversial proposal designed to tackle climate change.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the levy would be the first of its kind in the world.
The scheme would see farmers pay for gas emissions from their animals, such as methane gas in the farts and burps from cows, and nitrous oxide in the urine of livestock.
Ardern told farmers they should be able to recoup the cost by charging more for climate-friendly products.
She said the "pragmatic proposal" would reduce agricultural emissions while making produce more sustainable by enhancing New Zealand's "export brand".
The government hopes to sign off the proposal by next year and the tax could be introduced in just three years' time.
Andrew Hoggard, president of the Federated Farmers lobby group, said the scheme would "rip the guts out of small-town New Zealand".

Just feed them Gas-X
attach a condom to each cow

Madness down under.
This is in addition to their plan to learn to speak Mandarin in the near future.
The Beatles forgot to list burps and farts in their song. 🤣
‘Climate-friendly products’?
I went to the isle back in 2018....spending three weeks driving around.
Once you get out of Auckland, there’s only four significant cities, and then you come to the orchards, vineyards, and farms/cattle ranches. That’s the backbone of the nation.
The impression I get is that none of the national leadership ever gets out of Auckland or Wellington, so they have no idea how the rest of the country functions.
Which song? Happiness Is A Warm Gun?
The Bee ???
Although Jacinda is an idiot ...
I wonder what my Jacinda loving family members who have farms think about her now ???
BTW....based on the number of cattle and sheep New Zealand has it's no wonder they ‘selected’ them to be hit with a tax.....$$$$$$$$$$$
New Zealand is home to 6.3 million head of ‘dairy’ cattle, up 82% over the last two decades. The country also holds 3.8 million ‘beef’ cattle,.... 800,000 deer and a whopping 26.8 million head of sheep. .....That's a lot of livestock for a country of about five million people. ....Cha-ching cha -ching!
Good one!
No.
Taxman.
Lots of mental illness there apparently.
I worked several years with a gal who moved to the US from New Zealand. She said being here she is finally able to live a full and happy life that was otherwise boring and cut off from modern society in her country.
Lol. There was a witty article in the WSJ 30+ years ago that skewered this “problem”. The methane-obsessed can’t let their money grubbing scam go.
Making the country vegan by force.
The isle ???
Theres 3 main islands ..
Didnt you go to the South Island ???
In 3 weeks you had time to go all over ...
The whole country is just 1,000 miles top to bottom ...
The car ferry from Wellington across the Cook Strait to Picton takes 3 1/2 hours ..
The 4 main cities are Wellington the capital, and Auckland in the North Island and then Christchurch (the first incorporated city) and Dunedin in the South Island ..
You can be excused not going to Stewart Island, it is difficult to get there ...
Ther North Island is liberal the South fairly Conservative still ...
