Arizona Democratic gubernatorial candidate Katie Hobbs was a student leader at her Catholic preparatory high school when pupils took part in a yearly tradition known as ‘Slave Day.’
Copies from past yearbooks of Seton Catholic Preparatory High School were obtained by DailyMail.com and appear to show the practice went on for nearly four decades and was last mentioned in a yearbook from 1997.

Hobbs, who played an active student body role as a member of the yearbook staff and student council for part of her tenure, went to school there from 1984 through 1988.
The tradition entails freshman students performing tasks for senior class ‘masters’ that included performing ‘embarrassing acts of servitude.’
One example from the 1985 yearbook, which would have been the end of Hobbs’ freshman year, describes ‘slaves’ in her grade ‘wearing unbecoming hairdoes and unbecoming outfits, sporting embarrassing signs and performing embarrassing acts of servitude for senior masters for a day.’
It’s not clear if Hobbs participated herself in the ‘auctions,’ but her 1987 Student Council page credits her and the other student leaders for having ‘coordinated the many class events during Spirit Week’ - when Slave Day appears to have been celebrated.
She would have likely known the tradition was celebrated and regularly featured in the Seton Catholic Prep yearbook when she joined its staff in 1987.
The 1987 yearbook mentions ‘Slave Day’ four times.

My Jr. High had a slave day in the 70’s. It was in PE class.
It was weird. They ended it the next year.
We had a “slave day” tradition at our Catholic school
Only it was called “detention” and it involved nuns assigning chores to boys who misbehaved, unpaid tasks such as weeding flower-beds, mopping floors, or moving furniture
I remember slave auctions at my high school. We would buy them from the slavers and force them to pick cotton and tend crops in the fields outside our high school. And when they got out of line we would flay them nearly to death. We were good Democrats!
This is a campaign attack ad that is a nothing burger. She graduated from that school 34 years ago, so the “slave auction” was 34 years ago. Judging someone for something they may have done years ago had little connection as to what sort of person she is now.
Or course I prefer Lake, but this is ridiculous.
I despise Hobbs, but this is nothing.
We had “slave day” at my high school too. They sold off football players for a day to carry your books to class for you, etc.

That kind of hazing between incoming freshmen and seniors was traditional for many decades. It is a gag, a prank.
Our high school held a Slave Day back in the 1960s and 1970s.
Minorities at our school actively participated in it because it raised funds for their clubs.

We had that during spirit week as I remember. Forgot about it. Seniors would get freshmen to do menial tasks for them like carry their books. I recall a specific warning against “personal favors”
We had Freshman Day at my high school.
Seniors drew all over Freshman.
It stopped before I became a Senior.
I wouldn’t have done it anyhow.
