You must have me confused with Buwaya who thinks slavs have a disposition favourable to suicide bombing. In their psyche. I suggested it was racist to think so. He boldly declares he is a rascist. As for me I just think a lot of Ukrainians are nazis
Why is Ukraine a full member of the UN and had been since 1945?
That is news to me. Perhaps because all the so called USSR "Republics" had full membership?
Anyway, Ukraine had dozens of USSR nuclear missile launch sites before the USSR collapsed around 1990.
The U.S.S.R. consisted of 15 republics, but only the U.S.S.R., White Russia (Belarus), and Ukraine had seats. Russia (the R.S.F.S.R.) and the other 12 republics (Armenia, the three Baltic republics, etc.) did NOT have their own seats.
Regards,
Besides the U.S.S.R. itself, both Ukraine and White Russia (Belarus) had seats in the General Assembly.
The justification for giving Ukraine and White Russia - both of which, after all, belonged to the U.S.S.R. - their own seats in the General Assembly was that they had suffered "special suffering" in WW II.
Make of that what you will.
Regards,
News to me.
Ukraine and the north Black Sea coast were the primary foot path for Homo Sapiens into Europe that began around 40,000 years ago. North of Ukraine, the route was obstructed by glacial ice and drought until about 15,000 years ago.
There are Homo Sapien artifacts in the north Caucasus region - on Ukraine's southeast border - beginning around 100,000 years ago.
Most people consider Hitler's invasion of Russia to have been military suicide.
Actually, the center piece of his strategy was that White Russia and Ukraine would revolt against the Soviets and fight side by side with the Germans.
That was a completely plausible plan - right up to the moment when the German SS showed up and started slaughtering the Jews and the local Soviet intelligentsia and expropriated all the Soviet farmers.
I assume that you have posted that for the benefit of others here at FR who are perhaps not as well-versed in E. European military history. For example, for the benefit of people for whom it was "news" that not all 15 Soviet republics had seats in the U.N. (your post #123), but rather only the USSR itself plus White Russia and Ukraine.
Living in C. Europe for 40+ years, M.A. in Slavonics from prestigious European university, married to Russian Jew with Ukrainian roots who is now teaching German to Ukrainian refugees.
We have lived this history. And what we didn't directly live, we debated with our university profs back in the 80s.
Hence better - when in doubt - to begin such lectures with, "As you probably already know..."
Nichts für ungut!
Regards,
I’m surprised it is news to you
Just because there were human settlements or civilizations, there is no continuity with the east slavic politics.
Just as the central plains cities have no continuity to the usa.
The Slavic culture broke off from the othe indo European cultures only about 1700 years ago which is why slavic languages are far more interrelated than say Indic or Iranic
What you describe in your post is prehistory.
No polities even remotely identifiable with Muscovy or Ukraine were in existence 3,000 years ago. It would be madness to attempt to establish a historical claim to independent statehood or the like based upon such paleontological artifacts.
Having said that: I am firmly in the camp supporting the right of existence of a sovereign Ukraine in its borders of 1991.
I suggest that you discard your ironic use of the pet phrase "news to me."
All said in the spirit of rational and calm discourse (though not without a modicum of humorous ribbing).
Regards,
Seems like a lot of historical facts are “new to you”.
Have you read any history books?
The USSR and Bialorus and Ukraine had individual seats in the United nations.
The thing is that the east slavic entities have had divergent histories since 1260 to the mid 1700s.
I also listed the Mongols, the Tartars, the Ottomans, the Austrian empire, and the Polish empire.
My obvious point - when was Ukraine ever an independent self-governing nation with well defined borders before 1990-2020?
"News to me" is not ironic. It is the polite way to point out that I have more factual knowledge about a subject than someone else does.
The problem of not attacking civilian populations and the just war theory associated with this idea is that civilian populations create the economic engine that funds the war machine. This is why, when a group of people (call it a country) are exetentially threatened, civilians are eventually targeted.
The US did this in WWII with the carpet bombing of dresden and the nuking of two japanese cities among just a few examples. There are many more throughout history.
