Column: Farmworkers just rolled Newsom. What does it say about the Latino vote?
LA Times ^ | SEPT. 28, 2022 | ANITA CHABRIA

SACRAMENTO — Turns out “Sí, se puede” isn’t just a rallying cry. It’s a threat. Gov. Gavin Newsom just learned that the hard way.

On Wednesday afternoon, after a morning of glory in which Newsom signed a number of important laws to break the logjam on affordable housing in California, word started leaking out that he would also put pen to paper on Assembly Bill 2183, a measure by the United Farm Workers meant to make it easier for those who labor in our fields to form a union.

It’s a bill Newsom has fought against vehemently for months and promised to veto if it reached his desk. But for weeks since it actually landed in his lap, it has mushroomed into a political nightmare.

The Capitol stairs have become home to dozens of farmworkers holding a vigil to demand his signature. President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris put out public statements in support of it, as did House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco), Newsom’s political mentor. Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello traveled to Sacramento to sing “This Land Is Your Land” with union members.

The farmworkers have danced, marched, dined and interviewed ceaselessly — backed by big names and big love for a profession that is honored as much as it is abused in this state.

The PRI now has an electoral majority in California.

Where are the limousine liberals going to move when it is time for them to turn California into Venezuela and scrap the Democrat party brand of Marxism run by too many white people?

Oh for sure but this bill isn’t going to make him popular with all the other winery owners.

Newsom has been forced to kiss the ring of Delores Huerta, the patron saint of California leftism. A living legend. She has always been a Marxist thorn at the side of Californians, but recently she started a foundation that’s been very effective in screwing over what few conservatives remain in California.

First, the UFW is to be restored to its former, yet overrated glory. That’s why there was tremendous pressure on Newsom to sign the bill this time. Huerta and her foundation were also active in pressuring counties with GOP majorities to gerrymander county districts to give leftist majorities, using racism and diversity as an excuse. Because Fresno, Kern and Riverside counties didn’t kiss Huerta’s ring, they will be the only counties in California where the state will dictate the redistricting process in 2030, thanks to 3 bills she pushed to punish them (bills of attainder?).

In a state full of evil scum, Delores Huerta may be to most evil of all.

It will kill the agriculture industry in Ca. His policies have already made enough of what made Ca. wealthy pack their companies up and leave. But I predict he will cave, because Democrats are not really business smart, unless it is crushing businesses. I give him a little credit for at least somewhat seeing this will create large issues.

Yeah, he did. And what they won't tell you is that Ceasar Chavez was a labor economist who understood that the farm workers he represented got paid better when there were fewer of them. He actually supported the Eisenhower era program called "Operation Wetback" and was a passive supporter of the Bracero program before it ended in 1964 because he understood the simple fact that unions were labor cartels and worked best when labor was a valued commodity.
