Why Putin would want to blow up Nord Stream 2, and the advantages it gives him
The telegraph ^ | James crisp

The Russian leader has a record of weaponising fuel supplies and believes his people can endure economic pain longer than western Europe

The suspected sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines could be a page ripped straight from Vladimir Putin’s playbook of panic, escalation and misdirection.

The former KGB agent’s illegal war on Ukraine resulted in unprecedented Western sanctions against Moscow.

But the Russian president is confident that his people can endure economic pain longer and better than Europeans.

His calculation is that soaring gas prices and the cost of living crisis in a continent hopelessly addicted to Russian energy will turn the situation to his advantage.

European gas prices have been dropping for the last four days. On Tuesday, after news of the suspected attack, they rose by 20 per cent. The British price was up 33 per cent.

European countries are pivoting away from Putin’s oil and gas. So in 2 years there would be nothing to turn on

And what about the other 25 brutalized countries and ravaged peoples around the world who are much more deserving the global policeman’s attention than this corrupt hole. So, in your opinion, we should be propping up Biden’s stooge rather than sending billions to Africa to help save the Christians being slaughtered. What’s wrong with you? What kind of a fiend sends resources enriching military industrial oligarchs rather than saving the Kurds. You make a lousy world policeman.

I agree with this view. Blowing the pipeline takes gas off the table as a means of leverage. Putin can no longer threaten to cut off supplies or offer to restore them. Germany can’t be tempted to make a side deal to get the gas flowing again.

Further, the Europeans have to look for permanent replacement for Russian gas. Even with the end of conflict there is no way gas can be restored in the quantities previously available from Russia.

So, while Putin is a clever chess player, he gains nothing attacking his own pipeline. Now, who did it can never admit they did it. But who benefits is clear, and it isn’t Russia.

I’m happy to be proven wrong.

Putin miscalculated on many other things in this war. He didn't estimate the reaction of the other players well at all. Therefore, if Russia ultimately doesn't benefit from the loss of the Nord Stream, doesn't mean he didn't do it. Could be just another strategic miscalculation in a long string, and therefore not a clever chess player in the final analysis.

"This hurts Russia more than it helps them. Turning off the spigot on their end seems a lot easier."

Why would Russia damage/destroy part of its own pipeline, knowing they'd lose a precious commodity? It makes no sense. It would be like Ford or General Motors damaging all the cars on the assembly line.

And the important thing to remember is this isn’t something that’s played out. Rather, this is something that just started. We now get to watch it play out over the next weeks or months. Or years.

In all seriousness though, I thank God I don’t live in europe. Kind of like a lot of Americans were saying right after Germany bombed poland.

Because Ukraine is part of Europe, and Russia was also threatening Poland and the rest of Eastern Europe with imminent destruction. Russia was threatening Poland just in 2021, performing nuclear/war games aimed at Poland, and fabricating a fake refugee crisis. It's obvious that if Ukraine had fallen in 3 days like Russia's propagandists claimed, Russia would have pushed on from there and began the process over again. And right now, you'd be explaining why Poland is filled with Nazis and deserved to be raped to death by the strong, macho penis of Vladimir Putin.

As for Ukrainian corruption, it's a lot less than the US, Germany, Italy, Spain, etc.

The U.S. has no shortage of stupid people.

These are the same people who have been joining you by
declaring our leaders to be villains for decades.

You are now joining people who don’t back Russia’s
invasion by calling Conservatives the poodles of Soros /
Obama / Biden / Schwabb?

Which of these four men ordered the invasion of the
Ukraine? I don’t like them, but none of them did.

Putin and his own circle of maniacs did.

You know that to be true also.

Look back to the 30s and how the lines were being drawn
then. American Nazis thought that Hitler was being
demonized unnecessarily. They thought he was someone
to be idolized.

People in Europe became collaborators with him.

We are seeing the same thing take place now, with
Putin as the guy that some folks think is being
mischaracterized.

We can all agree those four men and the organizations
they are affiliated with are evil. We cannot however
agree that one man started this war, and it has been a
fiasco from day one.

I have no animus for the Russian people, and what Putin
was doing in his own homeland was his and his people’s
task to iron out. When he went across the Ukraine’s
borders, he blew it.

We must get Trump back in, and address the Communists in
the United States. Backing Putin in this folly is not
productive. It is very very destructive.
