The Russian leader has a record of weaponising fuel supplies and believes his people can endure economic pain longer than western Europe
The suspected sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines could be a page ripped straight from Vladimir Putin’s playbook of panic, escalation and misdirection.
The former KGB agent’s illegal war on Ukraine resulted in unprecedented Western sanctions against Moscow.
But the Russian president is confident that his people can endure economic pain longer and better than Europeans.
His calculation is that soaring gas prices and the cost of living crisis in a continent hopelessly addicted to Russian energy will turn the situation to his advantage.
European gas prices have been dropping for the last four days. On Tuesday, after news of the suspected attack, they rose by 20 per cent. The British price was up 33 per cent.

Then when the war ends they could turn the gas back on and make money.

If Russia destroyed their own pipeline, they would have also destroyed the one that opened up the same day and the USA would be all over the media screaming about it.

Biden said he was going to destroy the gas pipeline back in February.
Now Putin could do it as Biden already took the blame.
Putin would not want to blow up the pipeline, Biden would though.

MOSCOW, September 28. /TASS/. US President Joe Biden should issue a reply as to whether the United States had carried out its threat over the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday.
“US President Joe Biden must answer the question of whether the United States carried out its threat on September 25 and 26 when an emergency was reported at three lines of Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2, which has been preliminarily recognized as ruptures, whereas he suggested those were blown up,” the Russian diplomat said on her Telegram channel. On it, she posted a video in which the US leader delivers the speech in question.
“His statement of intent was backed up with a promise. One must be responsible for one’s words. Failure to understand what one says does not absolve anyone of responsibility. Europe must know the truth!” Zakharova emphasized.
On Tuesday, Nord Stream AG reported about “unprecedented damage” on Monday that affected three lines of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines registered within several hours. The first was identified along Nord Stream 2 near the Danish island of Bornholm, and two leaks were discovered afterwards. Denmark’s Energy Agency said a large amount of natural gas had streamed out. Aircraft and vessels were advised to stay at least five miles away from the site of the incident.
Later, Swedish seismologists said two explosions had been recorded along the routes of both pipelines on Monday. President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen slammed the incidents as sabotage and warned that “any deliberate disruption is unacceptable [and] will lead to the strongest possible response.”

Domestic politics. Europe is weeks away from ending all gas imports from Russia. Putin used to make $20 billion a month selling gas to Europe. That money was about to vanish from the Russian economy.
By blowing up the pipeline and presenting Biden as a villainous mastermind behind the plot Putin can blame the economic crisis on the USA rather than his decision to go to war.
No Putin is not that stupid. You first instinct was right he would have just turn off the flow. Joe Biden on the other hand is just that stupid and then some
