I agree with this view. Blowing the pipeline takes gas off the table as a means of leverage. Putin can no longer threaten to cut off supplies or offer to restore them. Germany can’t be tempted to make a side deal to get the gas flowing again.

Further, the Europeans have to look for permanent replacement for Russian gas. Even with the end of conflict there is no way gas can be restored in the quantities previously available from Russia.

So, while Putin is a clever chess player, he gains nothing attacking his own pipeline. Now, who did it can never admit they did it. But who benefits is clear, and it isn’t Russia.

I’m happy to be proven wrong.
