President Biden called three Florida mayors Tuesday as Hurricane Ian nears Florida’s western coast — but didn’t call Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, with whom he has clashed on issues such as COVID-19 policies and migration.
Presidents frequently speak directly with governors during emergency events — both to demonstrate political unity and to help coordinate federal and state relief efforts.
As the devastating Category 3 storm approached, Biden instead spoke with Tampa Mayor Jane Castor, St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch and Clearwater Mayor Frank Hibbard. Castor and Welch are Democrats, while Hibbard is a Republican.
DeSantis is a potential 2024 Republican presidential candidate and has frequently criticized Biden’s performance.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at her regular press briefing that Biden “held separate calls” with the mayors and “discussed planning and preparation for Hurricane Ian.”

This is not good. In a crisis like this, a governor could use the advice of a senior statesman.
senior statesman?
The MSM sure knows how to change subjects on a dime when they get into a corner. Talk all over international media of western powers about to ‘Coup De Tat’ Zelinsky’s ass and replace him with the head of the Ukrainian armed forces. I’ll bet you haven’t heard that on CNN, FOX or MSNBC. Convenient natural disaster for the Left.
Forget the old fool! What actions did Obama or Rice implement?
Sorry: /sarc
How long will this administration delay funds for recovery and reconstruction or what sort of conditions will they put on the federal assistance?
You mean like they did with restricting monoclonal antibodies for the state of Florida?
Saved him from paying a gibberish interpolator. Trunalimunumaprzure!
A pestilent child.
Piece - a - Schlitz !!
Good point. Shows his low character.
“PLANNING & PREPARATION:” is done days before the storm is on your front step.
Yeah, the last call ended with Biden saying “So I don’t think I ever told you the full story about staring down Corn Pop. It’ll take me abut 45 minutes” and DeSantis having aide give him a phony urgent call on the cell.
What a relief. He doesn’t have to say, “I’m busy - take a message”.
Thanks for asking a good question, sorry for the childish replies.
I believe your point was, while it is currently a hurricane, by the time it hits Florida landfall, it is currently forecasted to have declined to a tropical storm level. Maybe before it hits landfall, hurricane damage to Florida will occur, but I assume that depends upon how fast it is moving, and where it is when it declines to a tropical storm level. Obviously, there is considerable uncertainty, and I understand the evacuation, it doesn’t mean that represents the outcome at the current base forecast.
It would be nice if someone would just explain rather than throwing stones.
Biden is a very, very small man.
I’m pretty sure America is the only country with a population ignorant enough to believe politicians can make hurricanes come. I guess it’s their ability to call up the hurricane god, Jummbo Jobu.
