The White House press secretary on Monday said it was important to have a conversation about the Atlanta Braves' name, hours after President Joe Biden celebrated their 2021 World Series win with the team.
It comes at a time when several professional sports teams have jettisoned Native American terms as nicknames or titles - such as the Cleveland Indians, now the Guardians, and the Washington Redskins, now known as the Commanders.
In contrast, Braves' fans continue to do their 'Tomahawk Chop' celebration.
'We believe that it's important to have this conversation,' said Karine Jean-Pierre when she was asked about the name during her daily briefing.
'And Native American and indigenous voices, they should be at the centre of this conversation. That is something that the president believes, is something that this administration believes and he has consistently emphasised that all people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.'

We went through this with the Redskins. The media would repeatedly poll Native Americans on the name and they would overwhelmingly oppose change, and they would overwhelmingly NOT be offended. So the media would whitesplain to them why they were actually offended, but just didn’t know it.
Nobody wants this except a few self-righteous, holier-than-thou #woke activists.
Vast, large majorities of “Native Americans” not only say they’re not offended by “Native American” team names, but are proud of them, but #woke whitefolk (progressives) decided that they, and not the group in question, get to decide what offends the group in question, rather than the members of that group. That is racist.
A take on the Cleveland name controversy from an actual Indian, not a white person who decided what offended Indians without asking them. Polls show substantial majorities of “Native Americans” agree with her, and virtually every Indian I know shares a similar view.

It’s a very sad day for Cleveland. Today we lay to rest the Cleveland Indians. The owners will now call the team the Cleveland Guardians, (should be the Cleveland Sell Outs.) Even though we saw it coming, and we should have been prepared, it still seems as if we’re losing a member of our family. For me the tribe represented something that I was able to identify with. Being Choctaw, it was a team who represented me, something to be proud of. But someone at the offices in Cleveland took the bait and decided it was now shameful to be Indian and I should be ashamed of who I am. I was born and raised in Cleveland area, spent 35 years there... the Cleveland Indians were the tribe that raised me. It was great to go to ball games and see others proud of a team that represented who I was as well. So many bonding friendships were made over Tribe games. Even when I moved from Ohio I continued to be a Tribe fan. Going to see them in Arlington when they played the Rangers. It was awesome seeing the number of people here who were Tribe fans when I moved to southeastern Oklahoma 15 years ago. (As well as Redskin, Chiefs and Braves fans.) These were teams who represented us. That is all a thing of the past now. A new generation has decided they are hurt and offended... sometimes it seems by the very light of day. I wish the City of Cleveland all the best with this decision to politicize baseball and remove a source of pride for so many. But since I have no tie to this new team or the statues on the bridge it represents, to me it’s just another team now. Cleveland has taken away the fun and excitement baseball was meant to be. RIP My Tribe. 😞 Well remember the good times.
I saw that in some old TV Guide for Indianapolis because the “Crackers” used to play in Indianapolis in AAA baseball.
What a name...LMAO
Said activists being white, liberal, and under the age of 30.
Atlanta Squaws would be fine.
Hey Karine, you want a conversation? Ok. SHADDAP!
There was even a Negro league called the Atlanta Black Crackers.
I can’t imagine the nightmare of a ‘conversation’ with this stuttering, poorly educated person...she’d be shuffling through her ring binder to find the next point.
CLEVELAND, OH – Portage County Sheriff Bruce D. Zuchowski today is speaking out against the Cleveland Indians changing their team name to the “Guardians” after the 2021 season. Zuchowski, whose wife is part Cherokee and Blackfoot says the Indians name does not offend American Indians.
“I felt compelled to make a statement on behalf of the silent majority,” Sheriff Zuchowski said. “For the past few days, the release has been weighing heavy on my mind with disappointment and hopelessness. I thought back to the roots of baseball – an American family tradition. Sometimes referred to as America’s National Pastime, the game of baseball has played an active role in our nation for centuries.”
Zuchowski said changing the name is changing history and an American staple to soothe the complaints of a few.
“When I was a child, I remember observing my grandfathers watching the Indians game on TV or listening on their AM radios. They both loved the Indians back in the day. Today, I know they are both turning over in their grave with anguish and disgust toward the recent actions,” Zuchowski said. “My wife is a descendent from the Cherokee and Blackfoot American Indian tribe. Both she and her relatives never viewed the Cleveland Indians as a biased or prejudiced team but rather their hometown baseball franchise. This is once again another attempt of trying to erase our history due to the outcry of the few that affects the many.”
Zuchowski said he will continue to boycott professional sports as they work through their wokeness.
“I have boycotted professional sports for the past three years and if you were to ask me who the starting lineup was for the Indians, I couldn’t tell you. Some may question if I don’t care to watch or follow their progress, why should I care about their name change? The fact is that the general standpoint is not about this particular position taken by the team but rather the principle of the decision-making process,” Zuchowski said. “These unfortunate decisions are being made while continuously impacting individuals and industries across the nation. Both lawmakers and decision-makers need to begin to think about the majority of their constituents before caving to the impulsive demands being made by a small group of the public.”
OMG I didn’t know that one.
That would be swell. Then every time I seen them it would make me laugh. Peckerwoods would be good too.
They only existed for a couple of years, but still...
The “Black Crackers,” that is.
What business is it of hers??? 🙄
Nope.
There should be a “conversation” about fixing Haiti’s never ending catastrophic problems.
Hey Karine, we should have a ‘conversation’ about you changing your “profession”.

Naming something after something or somebody usually expresses reverence.
Pretty much anybody would love to have a team named after them!
Are New England Patriots making derogatory statement about Patriots? Are lions, tigers. cardinals or oilers supposed to be upset?
I would think, the purging of “native” symbols from US sports is really derogatory to them!
By the way the main Navaho high school in AZ has a team named, guess what?, Redskins!
Buy the team and name it whatever you want.
Until then, it’s none of their concern if the keep the team’s name or change the team’s name.
