Republican Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz slammed House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s “Commitment to America” agenda in an exclusive interview with the Daily Caller on Friday, focusing specifically on one bullet point that suggests the GOP should subsidize the hiring of 200,000 new police officers through recruitment bonuses. ... “So if you see, like, the third bullet point in whatever this is suggests that the federal government needs to fund incentives for 200,000 new law enforcement. I do not believe in the federal government being excessively entangled in state and local law enforcement. It is not practical,” Gaetz told the Caller.
Gaetz also suggested that McCarthy may have gotten the idea from ex-GOP pollster and communications consultant Frank Luntz, noting that McCarthy rented a room in Washington, D.C., from Luntz and called him his “roommate.” ...
“Publicly, the day the minority leader released his palm card calling for excessive federal involvement in local law enforcement, I stood on the floor and lambasted federal involvement in local law enforcement,” Gaetz added. “And what I’m telling you on the record is I’m against the federal government utilizing money as a way to impact behavior at the local level in the public safety space, and I’m against it whether Californian Nancy Pelosi pushes it or whether Californian Kevin McCarthy pushes it.”

It also must be noted that overuse of the police, and hiring more cops, is simply more Big Government. To justify hiring more cops, those cops are expected to write more tickets to bring in more money to pay for themselves, etc.

Gotta say I really like Gaetz - I appreciate the fact that he is opening the door for a Speaker other than McCarthy, and that is a good idea. McCarthy is a dunce.
It seems they are trying to undercut one of if not the biggest checks on corrupt, centralized power... the independent locally elected sheriff. It is the sheriff at the heart of the 2nd amendment’s “well-regulated militia” to call them up to defend against lawless mob action. The sheriff is one of the only remaining lawful authorities standing between the citizens and a potential dictatorship. Governors used to be, but the hunger for federal highway funds and school funds has made them more and more dependent on federal handouts.

I was thinking along the same lines. The feds will make sure new hires will be committed to doing nothing while children are butchered. Police departments need to give scenarios and see if their new prospects would engage gunmen in school shootings. If not, thank them for their time and suggest that they apply for social service positions.
I’m with Gaetz on this. And I’m hoping that McCarthy does not become Speaker when Republicans get their large majority this November. There are better in the House for this… TRUE MAGA representatives.

if a local government wants more police, let them pay for that themselves.
You’re 100% right. The bad part is that the federal government issues grants for so many things that local departments take advantage of. IE...Community Policing Grants. Departments use that money to fund positions with the stipulation that X number of officers will fill a certain position. And sometimes that position does not allow for those officers to be on duty and answering 911 calls, because if they did, they would be violating the terms of the federal grant.
Then you have damn near every department in the country applying for Homeland Security grants for all sorts of stuff from gear/equipment to vehicles and $400k Bearcats. It’s wrong on every level. If a department justifies the need for a $400k armored vehicle for SWAT-type stuff, let the citizens in that jurisdiction pay for it.
But then again, this whole thing will slowly lead you to the insane asset forfeiture and how departments use federal grants to cover the costs of items and then use asset forfeiture for their toys.
Departments have full time jobs for grant writers.
This is an indication that they want to continue feeding this black hole, sit back pat themselves on the back and remain ineffective while in the majority

It’s a gateway to converting local law enforcement to a federal police force.
If you like the current FBI and DOJ terrorizing innocent citizens you will love a federal police force terrorizing non-democrats at the local level.

I’m sure the GOP has done extensive polling over the summer and determined that the economy and crime are the two biggest issues for voters in November. About 90% of the campaign ads I’ve seen for Republican candidates here in my state are filled with video footage of violent crimes … and a narrative that says: “Democrats like So-and-So want to keep these criminals out of jail.”
They are extremely effective ads. I agree with Gaetz on this, but his position is going to be a total loser in swing states and House districts.
