Vladimir Putin can call up all the troops he wants, but Russia has no way of getting those new troops the training and weapons they need to fight in Ukraine any time soon.
With his invasion of Ukraine faltering badly, the Russian President on Wednesday announced the immediate “partial mobilization” of Russian citizens. Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Russian television that the country will call up 300,000 reservists.
If they end up facing Ukrainian guns on the front lines, they are likely to become the newest casualties in the invasion Putin started more than seven months ago and that has seen the Russian military fail at almost every aspect of modern war.

For reference:
Russia in Ukraine (7 months and counting): killed ~56,300 ; wounded ~168,900
USSR in Afghanistan (124 months): killed ~15,000 ; wounded ~35,000
This was WWI in a nutshell, All sides poorly trained their conscripts, and sent them into the meat grinder.
“Not quite so. Russia has substantial forces near Ukrainian border that were being reorganized and retrained all along.”
Because they sucked during the early days of the invasion.
my guess is many of them will never leave russia. They need bodies to take over posts within Russia so they can send their remaining troops that are trained to Ukraine.
“I do believe this will draw us into it, because of the psychos in charge.”
I don’t think NATO as a group or the US individually will become engaged in actual combat unless Russia does something stupid such as attacking a NATO country.
Thank you for your service. Sorry it involved a Purple Heart.
> Why do people think today’s Russians see Ukraine as the existential threat that was Hitler’s Germany. <
You know that Ukraine is not a threat. And I do, too. But what does the average Russian think? It’s very difficult to tell because of the fog and propaganda from all sides.
I suppose that a rough analogy could be the Vietnam war. The American public was told that North Vietnam was an existential threat to democracy. If SouthVietnam fell, there’d be a terrible domino effect throughout all of Southeast Asia. The American public bought that hook, line, and sinker. At first, anyway.
What does the Russian public believe today?
I do believe the US with Brandon will overrule our NATO Allies and ignore their winter heating concerns. I am certain of this.
“Then Georgy Zhukov appeared on the scene.”
In my opinion, he won the war for the USSR. Yet, after the war, the Soviets treated him almost as a pariah. When he was no longer useful to the regime, they for all intents and purposes “disappeared” him.
A better comparison would be how the Nazis saw Czechoslovakia in 1938. It wasn't just about the Sudetenland. The Germans saw Czechoslovakia as a base for Britain and France to "surround" Germany on two fronts. And Hitler considered that all parts of the former Austria-Hungary should be under German control, especially now that he had gobbled up Austria.
“Russia sucks in the winter.”
Well, it sure as hell sucked in the Winter War with Finland.
You do realize that Ukraine is being defended by Ukrainians who have lived in Ukrainian Winters their entire lives, right? That just because you use the Soviet propagandist term "Nazis" for anyone who opposes Russia doesn't make them Germans unused to Ukrainian winters? And that Ukrainians also aren't Frenchmen/other Western Europeans unused to Ukrainian winters? Right?
They're fighting on their own land. The idea that the cold is going to be an advantage to those invading them is laughable.
A lot of those Soviet soldiers who fought the Nazis were Ukrainians.
“Don’t need to train or support them when you have nukes CNN.”
Then why even call them up? Are you suggesting the war go nuclear?
>So Ukrainians right to exist doesn’t have meaning?
Well, next time NATO can avoid paying neonazis to remove an elected president friendly to Russia, which resulted in them using said money after the removal to bomb Russian-friendly parts of the Donbass.
Ukraine is just as guilty as Russia.
I still kick myself for not buying a case of those in cosmoline and a few bricks of ammo back in the 90s when they were dirt cheap.
“The leadership is not the same as n WWII. Russia has already spent its wad on their class A troops and heavy weapons. Unlike Stalin, Putin has no lend lease from the USA and England nor has he the political propaganda to deprive the Nazis out of the fatherland. This is Russians being the invaders and committing war crimes.”
All that is true.
Everybody mentions nazis. No one mentions the holodomor.
For the same reason our media was soft on Hitler in the 30s. They still saw Germany and Russia as two huge markets they wanted to do business with.
