Hurricane Ian
NHC/NOAA ^ | 23 September 2022 | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2022 2:32:24 AM PDT by NautiNurse

The late-blooming 2022 Atlantic Tropical Storm season is making up for lost time. A tropical system has developed in the Central Caribbean Sea. This storm system is forecast to threaten continental U.S. interests next week. While the tropical wave passed south of a key geographic area known as Hebert's Box #1, it will very likely pass through Hebert's Box #2. These boxes are useful as predictors of hurricanes that will strike South Florida. For more information about Hebert's Boxes, see Hebert Box. See graphic below which illustrated the Hebert's Boxes.

I don’t remember - it was 2-3 years ago. I ordered them on amazon. My son said it was enough of a power bank to power several computers at a conference he was at where there were no outlets at the tables….

Noon today from https://www.wunderground.com/wundermap :

wunderground.com-wundermap">

They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; These see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep. For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof. They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble. They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits’ end. Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses. He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still. Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven. Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! (Psalms 107:23-31)

It’s the rain that’s going to get us. We’re starting with thoroughly saturated ground, now our local guys are saying add roughly 2 FEET more rain. Apparently it’s slowed down again. It was expected to be very bad by now but they’re predicting the worst will start around 2 AM. Here in Orlando we can look for 60 mph sustained with gusts up to 80. For several hours. Tornados are popping up here and there- very localized and typical.

We’ve had heavy rain since around 8 this morning. Our condo parking lot is covered in water. It’s blowing like crazy and we have many beautiful old oak trees at the end of their life span, making them vulnerable to this weather. Like the gorgeous one right outside my bedroom window! Our local weather guys keep saying there’s nowhere for this water to go!

These are small and unremarkable problems when I look at my friends in to the southwest.. but we still have to cope with it.

Power off and on- on at present.

Continued prayers for all those in Ian’s path. I know several in my family won’t be getting a good night’s sleep again.

I’ve got a sister in Windermere - not far outside of Orlando. Granted, she’s a liberal trump-hater, but she’s still kin. So even if I don’t admit it, I don’t want anything terrible to happen to her.

Hang in there - you are in a better spot than others, regarding the storm, and I am too (I’m in Tennessee now days), but it’s still a mess. I’m keeping tabs on a friend in Ft. Myers - he and his family are at his work location in a solid building on the third floor.

Understood. Nasty conditions. My sister, in west Houston suburbs, had water rising up through her yard to within 3 inches of her front porch. It stayed that high for about 18 hours, then receded. No damage in the house, but it was close.

Took 3-4 days to get the streets drained enough to drive out though. They had to roll up their shorts and walk to get anywhere.

JACKSONVILLE FIRST COAST NEWS

Winds will consistently be gusting out of the northeast. Gusts near 65 mph from 6 p.m. Thursday through 6 a.m. Friday.

For the First Coast: The forecast is coming into better focus. For the First Coast the highest winds will be Thursday and Friday.

Wednesday the rain will begin to build in from the South a breeze the near the coast developing by evening.

As the coastal winds set up, they will push the ocean inland and combine with rainfall of 6-14” to produce flooding. Plan on winds of 25-40 out of the northeast with isolated gusts to 70 later Thursday into early Friday.

The most widespread flooding looks to be from 1 a.m. Thursday to 12 p.m. Friday with a combination of heavy rain, onshore wind, and high river levels about 4 feet above normal. Thus, the threat of river flooding along the St. Johns and its tributaries is possible. The worst flooding will NOT be oceanfront. There will be a risk of rough surf, rip currents, and some coastal flooding though.
