China on Wednesday called on Ukraine and Russia to kick-start peace talks just hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin escalated the war by mobilizing conscripts to join the fight.
"We call on the parties concerned to resolve the issue through dialogue and negotiation and find a solution that accommodates all parties’ legitimate security concerns," Chinese Foreign Ministry Wang Wenbin told reporters. "We also hope the international community will create conditions and space for that."

China is not being "the adult in the room." It's obvious that Russia is trying to force Ukraine to accept its current post Feb-2022 territorial gains. At a minimum, that should be refused. Russia should gain nothing from its current war.
Russia should be forced to return to its Feb lines and Ukraine should accept the Russian annexation of the territories previously help by Russia, including Crimea. Russia should also withdraw forces from Transnistria and that territory goes back to Moldova or to Ukraine (no more territorial disputes). Ukraine gets meaningful defense treaties and continued support to modernize its armed forces, probably by buying into Poland's military expansion with co-production of South Korean armor and artillery. It also needs a new air force.
The proposal is fatally flawed as it assumes the Russians can be trusted. Here’s a workable plan; Russia leaves Ukraine.
Sorry, but Russia just said the other day that there is no point to negotiating.
After next weeks referendums, Ukraine is gonna be much smaller...and that process is gonna continue until whats left of Ukraine learns how to live in peace with their neighbors.

So the net result of the war is to legitimize the occupation of Crimea ? A net result in the aggressor’s favor ? Why should Ukraine accept loss of their territory ? The only condition for ceasefire, not peace, would be for Russia to retreat to pre Feb 24th positions. Return to the status quo.
I would be happy to see Ukraine regain its 1991 borders. But I do not see how it can. They would have to arm and train several more brigades of armor, more aircraft, and would need a lot more and longer range missile artillery. I do not see anyone stepping up to the plate to help them do that.

LOL. Every week that passes means Russia controls less and less of Ukraine. Putin is proclaiming he will call up 300K reservists, but how will he train and equip them? We will simply crank up the artillery and other weapons deliveries to Ukraine. The Ukrainian army is also getting better and better. Putin is blowing smoke to try to get a settlement now, that’s all.
