Denver set to give 140 homeless people up to $12,000 in cash as part of 'basic income' program

More than 140 people experiencing homelessness in Denver will each be provided up to $1,000 in cash a month for up to one year as part of a basic income program designed to help "lift individuals out of homelessness," the city announced last week.

The $2 million contract with the Denver Basic Income Project was approved by the City Council and will provide direct cash assistance to more than 140 women, transgender and gender non-conforming individuals, and families in shelters.

"Just as important as housing and shelter is a regular source of income for those experiencing homelessness," Mayor Michael B. Hancock said. "This direct cash assistance will help more than 140 women and families currently in shelters move into stable housing, and provide support, so they can stay housed while opening space in our shelters to serve more people."

President Gerald Ford had a scheme of giving unemployed people a $10,000 a year job but the taxpayers paid $50,000 each due to bureaucracy and government handling costs.

Mafia and local Harlem hoodlums handing out cash in envelopes was more efficient.

I’ve lived in Denver for over 40 years. Used to be proud to say that I lived in Colorado. Not any more…now it’s humiliating.

That $$ goes straight to the liquor stores and dope dealers. The vast majority of homeless folks aren’t homeless because they just need a little $$. It’s mental illness and chronic addiction, and usually both co-occurring, that lands them in the streets.

We use to institutionalize these people and it was a mistake to unleash them on society.

Denver is the place to go, if I ever decide to go homeless. 🙂

Let's all watch as the homeless population begins to explode. SMDH

No mention of men there. So if you’re a homeless male vet, I just you’re just out of luck.

I’d guess there isn’t much for rent in Denver for $1000 a month, so they’re still homeless.

Wish there was an odds maker who would let us bid on the 140 and what they’ll end up doing with it and/or how they end up?

Denver set to give 140 homeless people local liquor stores marijuana dispensaries, and drug dealers up to $12,000 $1.7 million in cash taken from taxpayers...

Check the Denver politicians' families ownership of the beneficiaries of this illegal payout.

I'd like to see a follow up story a year from now about the individuals who receive this money. I wonder how many will be moving in a positive direction in their life versus how many will be worse off than they are now.

(By the way, what the hell is a "gender non-conforming person"?)

I am starting to pack now but I won’t need much to be considered homeless. Can I get payment in advance so I can hop a flight back to my state of origin where I live comfortably now?
