China doubles down on coal as energy crunch bites
France 24 ^

Beijing (AFP) – China has stepped up spending on coal in the face of extreme weather, a domestic energy crunch and rising global fuel prices -- raising concerns Beijing's policies may hinder the fight against climate change.

The country is the world's biggest emitter of the greenhouse gases driving global warming, and President Xi Jinping has vowed to reduce coal use from 2026 as part of a broad set of climate promises.

Beijing has committed to peaking its carbon emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.

Overall carbon emissions in China have fallen for four consecutive quarters on the back of an economic slowdown, research reported by climate monitor Carbon Brief showed in early September.

But at the same time, slowing growth has led authorities to rely on smokestack industries in an effort to boost the economy.

The push to shore up coal power -- which still makes up most of China's energy supply -- has alarmed analysts who warn that it will make an eventual transition to a renewables-dominated energy mix more difficult.

Spooked by an energy shortage last autumn, Chinese authorities in spring ordered coal producers to add 300 million tonnes of mining capacity this year -- the equivalent of an extra month of coal production for the country.

I’m very confused. How is China able to do this without Al Gore’s or Greta Thunberg’s permission?
The article doesn’t say.

“China doubles down on coal as energy crunch bites”

For those wondering why we’re willing to start a war with China over Taiwan, just read the above headline again.

China really must have some special kind of magic going for it. As you noted, they are a huge polluter. Yet no one seems to care.

And Covid was certainly released from one of their labs. How did that happen? Again, no one seems to care.

China and Russia are using their nuclear weapons to continue operations as the world’s largest climate molesters. They need to be made accountable and transformed to liberal democracy freeing their people to eat bugs.

Meanwhile in the USA we are shutting down our coal fired plants and substituting very expensive natural gas as the feed for our electric generating plants.

As $9 natural gas is burned to create electricity, get ready for major sticker shock when you get your electric bills.

Yup,anyone who’s been paying attention over the last twenty years knows that for every coal fired plant Western nations shut down the Butchers of Beijing open up ten. And theirs aren’t “clean” like ours.

Not sure how this is possible but with only 8 years left. I’m sure Greta and the Greenies will explain it.

You got it backwards.

We will end a war between China and Taiwan

We includes the USA and at least 5 or six other nations with navies currently patrolling the China Seas.

Be interesting to see how our carriers hold up against a salvo of hypersonics.

>>Air pollution is minor compared to the other stuff in china

I drove through Gary, IN on I-80 back in ‘67. The visibility couldn’t have been more than 200 yards or so.

It’s not like that anymore. We buy our steel from China.

You’re probably better at thinking away modern weapons that we didn’t bother to come up with countermeasures for than I am.
