ermany is ready to take a leading role in ensuring Europe's security, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Friday, vowing to transform the country's military into the "best equipped" on the continent.
Branding Vladimir Putin's Russia the "biggest threat" to NATO, Scholz said Europe had to be prepared to face up to the challenge.
"We are making it convincingly clear: Germany is ready to take on leading responsibility for the security of our continent," he told an army congress.
"As the most populous country with the greatest economic power and as a country in the middle of the continent, our army must become the cornerstone of conventional defence in Europe, the best equipped force in Europe."
Haunted by two world wars, Germany has always trod lightly and quietly on the world stage when it came to conflicts and military matters.
Scholz said the German army had for too long taken on roles such as "drilling wells, ensuring humanitarian help, stemming floods, also helping with vaccinations during the pandemic".

Interesting to hear - but so do Anglo-Saxons.
Could it simply be a human trait, to feel embarassed?
I have multiple in laws that live there and from what they’re saying I have a lot of trouble in believing your confidence in them.
I’m Spanish. And to go all German on you, go look it all up, you lazy incompetent @#₱&. Go do your own homework and get your own education, you sponger off better men.
What are you raving about
A German weakness is they can get whiny and sorry for themselves and neurotic. All the while they are solving their problems.
You wanted me to give you info you can look up for yourself.
What info?
“Yeah, what ScholzIdiot also failed to mention is that the Germany economy is steadily imploding along with its industrial production complex......”
Tempted to say, yah, just like before WWII.
However, Germany is infinitely better off today, and infinitely more economically, financially, and technologically advanced than pre WWII. So yes, this bothers me too. Almost as much as the Marxist Communists of the era.
However, if I had a dollar for every time we have seen pro fascist Putinist globalist/Chinese/Iranian axis supporters on FR repeat “Not our problem, not our fight”, and “let the EU deal with Russia”, I could have funded FR for a while.
Now that Putin and his fascist talking heads are weakly talking about obliterating all of Europe outright, combined with the occasional nukes comments, and even flying nuclear armed planes over multiple European nations, and essentially surrounding Great Britain and part of France with nuclear subs as happened in January and February of this year, it seems just plain stupid to expect everyone to just roll over. Same pro fascist Putinist globalist on FR who have laughed and mocked the EU for it’s weakness are now trying to have it both ways by their own statements.
And while at it, I am fundamentally much more deeply anti “neocon”, and anti sodomite than anyone on here who repeatedly default with the leftist tactic of mocking the messenger a “neocon”.
Too bad Germany is going to be bankrupt in a year.
A point. Germany had said during the Trump administration the would welcome forgiegn volunteers to join “Their army”. Germany does not have enough men.
If the wheels were to fall off the German ecomony they might look for a strongman to lead them to the glorious German destiny. Wonder who
Again, we all going to get to witness just how ‘infinitely better off’ they are in the coming months.
Most of Europe thrived off cheap Russian energy for decades.
Not any more. That energy relationship has been destroyed and will probably not ever be like it was.
Germany can fix its problems near instantly: Drop the sanctions. Novel idea huh? /s
I hear just to freak everyone out, the codename for this German military buildup will be called Operation Barbarossa
Tired of this hate on Germans. How old are you people? When the city of New Orleans was underwater the Germans were the first to provide aid, and had the best engineers to get the water out.
Well, maybe deadbeat was too harsh, but the budget of the EU is mainly footed by Germany, as you might know.
There is a lot of redistribution of funds from the richer to the poorer parts of the EU(SSR), and the former are not too happy with it.
Thus, I absolutely can relate to the British who opted out of the whole mess, and after having experienced a few difficulties in the immediate aftermath (which was to be expected, after all), just seem to be doing fine now.
But what do I know - I always have been an isolationist. This might have to do something with my own situation, though, as I am de facto not a human being. I am an autistic. After all, I can hardly relate to my countrymen - and not at all to the liberals among them. How then am I supposed to relate to aliens in any way?
Proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that Russia was right to worry about Germany(NATO”) invading via Ukraine.
They got plenty of trees to cut down and burn. And not just trees in Germany. They will pluck out Euro forests to keep the fires of industry burning.
Didn’t work for them in better days.
Understand. I think
Tell me what I said was untrue...
