Biden Meddles in Brexit Row Again – Truss Told to Cave on EU Demand in Trade Deal Threat

JOE BIDEN has waded into the Brexit row once again with a fresh warning over the Northern Ireland Protocol. By KATIE HARRIS 08:04, Thu, Sep 8, 2022 | UPDATED: 09:36, Fri, Sep 9, 2022

The White House warned that tearing up the post-Brexit deal for Northern Ireland would "not create a conducive environment" for US-UK trade talks.

Mr Biden's press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said yesterday: "There is no formal linkage on trade talks between the US and the UK and the Northern Ireland Protocol, as we have said, but efforts to undo the Northern Ireland Protocol would not create a conducive environment."

It is the latest intervention from the US President over the protocol, which is the subject of a bitter row between Britain and Brussels.

Mr Biden has repeatedly urged the UK not to take any action that could lead to a hard Irish border.

The warning comes after Liz Truss told the Commons on Wednesday that her preference is for a negotiated solution with the EU.

But she warned any agreement would have to deliver "all of the things we set out" in the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill.

The legislation hands ministers powers to unilaterally override elements of the protocol, which was designed to prevent a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic.

However, the arrangement has been an ongoing source of tension between the UK and the EU as it has led to checks on goods moving between Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Mr Biden raised the issue, which threatens to strain the transatlantic relationship, in his first phone call with Ms Truss on Tuesday.

The US leader, who has Irish roots, stressed the importance of reaching an agreement with the bloc.

According to the White House's account of the call, the pair discussed their "shared commitment to protecting the gains of the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement and the importance of reaching a negotiated agreement with the European Union on the Northern Ireland Protocol".

It comes as Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris yesterday echoed comments made by Ms Truss on the protocol.

Speaking in the Commons, Mr Heaton-Harris said he would prefer a negotiated settlement with the EU.

However he warned the Government would press ahead with the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill if necessary.

In response to a question from former Northern Ireland Secretary Theresa Villiers, Mr Heaton-Harris replied in the Commons: "We are committed to resolving the problems in the protocol, ideally through a negotiation, but, if not, through legislation so yes."

Ireland's premier Micheal Martin yesterday said he takes "heart" from Ms Truss's remarks that she would like to see issues surrounding the protocol resolved by negotiation.

He added that with goodwill the EU is ready to be flexible and responsive.

Speaking at an event in Dublin, the Taoiseach said: "I look forward to be in a position to speak to the British Prime Minister within the next day or two.

"I take heart from the Prime Minister's comments that her preferred approach to the protocol is to have it resolved by negotiation. That is certainly our view also and that of the European Union."

Earlier this week, the EU warned its position on the protocol had not changed "one iota".

Speaking on Monday ahead of Ms Truss being unveiled as Boris Johnson's successor, the European Commission demanded the post-Brexit arrangements for Northern Ireland are honoured.

I believe there was a hard border for many decades.

“In April 1923, just four months after independence, the Irish Free State established customs barriers on the border.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Partition_of_Ireland

There’s custom checks between the US & Canada and no one seems very upset about it.

For three decades goods, including raw food, passed freely between Ireland, Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK without a tizzy.

This is a fight for UK independence, for which it has paid tens of billions of pounds to get back.

Why the hell does he want to get our country involved in UK/EU relationships? It’s NONE OF OUR BUSINESS.

Is the Republic of Ireland really going to spend millions of Euros each year to stop a few smugglers?

The border runs through rural areas.

With the price of petrol, few people will drive 20 to 40 kilometers to save a few pounds buying smuggled goods.

Vehicles are taxed upon registration. What would be worth smuggling? What has high tariffs nowadays? The UK is not a cheap labour country.

Joe Biden is power-crazed.

He wants to be ‘important’.

The EU’s masters (in Berlin) still haven't forgiven Britain for defeating them in WWII. The best revenge they can reasonably hope for is breaking Northern Ireland away....which very possibly could cause Scotland to follow.

In terms of trade, the EU needs to worry about the hungry Chinese tiger and not the past its prime British lion.

Substitute “The Big Guy’s puppet master” and you’re absolutely correct. All The Big Guy *himself* wants now is to molest young girls and then settle down to some nice pudding and a Matlock marathon.

I’m not sure the Republic of Ireland wants (or is able) to pay the welfare costs of Northern Ireland.

“molest young girls”

It pretty sure it’s a Biden family male trait to test female receptiveness - sort of like a judge’s dog taking carefully-positioned whiffs of young women.

For many decades the Republic of Ireland has had written into its Constitution that *anyone* born *anywhere* on the island of Ireland is automatically and instantly a citizen of the Republic. They changed that a few years for the *entire* island...but today the overwhelming majority of those living in NI are citizens of Eire. So if an independence vote were to succeed in NI it's hard to imagine that unification didn't take place.

I am afraid the facts on the ground cannot be so airily dismissed, the economies of the Republic and Northern Ireland are thoroughly intermixed and practically impossible to segregate, hence, the problem for EU and GB.
