Ukraine has launched a new front in the counteroffensive, this time moving east into the Kharkiv region. Yesterday the Guardian reported the town of Balakliia had been encircled by Ukrainian troops.

Today, Balakliia is more than encircled. President Zelensky just published this video of Ukrainian soldiers standing on a Russian flag in the city with the Ukrainian flag flying behind them.

(snip)

And the push east has already moved on to another small town called Volokhiv Yar where the Ukrainian flag has also been raised.

but Russia didn’t do that, because there were no attacks - what there was was an armed Russian separatist group, supplied by Russia, attacking Ukraine from within

It was mostly the Russian army back then. Just soldiers with no insignia in violation of all laws of war. Russia and their useful idiots lied about it then just like they lie compulsively now.

The US will massively benefit economically by kicking Russia and its corrupting influence out of Europe. Obviously, you don’t want that and the good American jobs that will come with it.

Utter baloney and pure Kremlin propaganda, since that had nothing to do with the objectives the Russians were and are doing as they invaded. This was just the continuation of what Putin started by taking over Crimea. He wants the Soviet Union back and has long lamented its dissolution. Same thing with his attacks on Georgia.

Over 1,000 square kilometers liberated since September 1st - more than Russia captured since June.

The last couple of days have been the deadliest for Russian forces since the start of the war.

You are mistaken. This Pooty Pal is NOT rooting for hit squads. They are saying that we who celebrate Uke victories of Ukes, and their deserved retaliations are “seriously sick freaks” The seriously sick freaks here are those who always support Putin and Russia and consider they are actually honest FReepers.

Before the war. Kharkiv’s many universities and colleges, etc. had 300,000 national and international students. Although there may have been a number of Russian connected residents, a university town generally has a higher population of intellectuals and other independent types of people. I doubt the majority of the population had much desire to be part of Russia’s type of government, no matter what language they spoke. I wonder what percentage voted for Zalensky in 2019?

So you don’t believe the Russians can and would kill Ukrainian officials? I thought that was their original idea.

Thing is that the West is making unforced errors. Send in tanks, modern aircraft, and heavy weapons, let the Poles off their leash, and take the fight to Russia. And also unleash domestic energy production. Let’s make oil and energy so cheap as to make it unfeasible for Russia to sell it. And let’s bring home production from China and let their economy collapse, depriving Russia of their top energy market. And we need European NATO to spend 10% of their GDP for 5 years to catch up their militaries, so we don’t always need to shoulder the lion’s share of the burden in Euro conflicts. We will still be there to help, but China is also a major concern and we need to be there as well (let Japan off their leash as well).

Specifically Putin wanted to seize all the parts of Ukraine that were rich in potential gas, oil, and other resources, which was mostly the East and Crimea. By so doing he would prevent Ukraine from developing these resources and undercutting the Russian market in Europe which Ukraine would naturally end up developing if it keeps their own resources. This is why Ukes won’t negotiate until the Russians are pushed out.
