Why woke women’s co-working space the Wing failed: ‘A gossipy, very toxic environment’
New York Post ^ | September 2, 2022 | Jeanette Settenbre

When the Wing first opened its doors in Flatiron in 2016 as a pioneering, women-only coworking space, it became a phenomenon. Founders Audrey Gelman and Lauren Kassan raised more than $100 million from investors like WeWork and Airbnb. At its peak, it had 11 locations...

But things took a sudden turn the following year. In June 2020, Gelman stepped down after employees protested her leadership and alleged mistreatment of black and brown staffers. It was the beginning of the end.

Earlier this week, Wing members received an email announcing that the club’s six remaining locations would be closing due to “increasing global economic challenges” and “the backdrop of the Covid pandemic.” For many former members, the news came as no surprise — with some feeling it was even good riddance.

“It was a gossipy very toxic environment for my team,” Kanessa Tixe, a Wing member in 2018 and the founder of marketing and PR entertainment company TS Collective, told The Post. “It was all a PR machine. You can hire all the black, and Spanish and white women you want, but if you’re not setting up a culture appropriately, it is going to crumble. I think it became too much of a hype of female empowerment.”

The strict rules at the club, which cost members $185 to $200 per month, didn’t always foster #GirlBoss success, especially for those using it as a coworking space daily. ...

Tixe said she felt tension from employees who frequently told her to lower her voice while on calls and in meetings in her office space. She was eventually asked to surrender her membership after a staffer said she offended one of the employees for using the term “home girl” in a light-hearted and friendly context.

I imagine the idea was for a bunch of privileged liberal females to have a place where they could all try to out-woke each other.

The Dutch syndicate of Survivor had a series where they put men in one tribe and the women in another.

By the third day, the men were living the life of Riley. They built themselves a little park with park benches. They had food and all their other needs met. They had their huts and beds and everything.

The women had nothing. They spent their days gossiping and bickering and working on their suntan.

The Survivor show had to end their little experiment just to ensure thevwormen would survive.

You’ve really mellowed a lot. I seem to remember when I first joined FR back some 20 years ago, you struck me as one of the more aggressive fellows. But you don’t seem so now. Maybe I’m remembering wrong. Or maybe we just are none of us 35 anymore. =)

"...Bottom line, they’re no hard and fast rules when it comes to terrible managers, male and female are both capable of being terrible..."

I could not be more in agreement with that statement. I have had almost all great bosses in my career, both male and female.

My boss right now is a woman, and I would go to the mat for her. Because she is smart and sensible, and would go to the mat for me. And has.

It is a well known fact to anyone who reads my posts that I am against women serving in the military in combat roles. Dead set against it, and I have my reasons which if anyone asks me to, I will expand on freely.

But it isn't because I regard women as somehow less capable of competent decision making.

And my current boss is one of the most level-headed, capable minds I have encountered in my career. And she isn't the first female manager who I regard that way.

For me, it boils down to conducting myself professionally to make my boss's job easier. In a heirarchy, that means knowing what my boss needs me to do, and doing it...and more. Overdelivering, as it were.

Reducing his or her stress by doing my job, and allowing him or her to depend on me. Owning the job, and taking full responsibility for getting it done fully, safely, and completely.

I want to be a fire and forget missile for my boss.

And they get nothing but the full truth from me. The full truth, even if it means my ass. Even if it makes their life miserable. I build that foundation for my bosses so that they know if they want an honest opinion on a bad situation, they can depend on me not to equivocate or sugar coat it.

I have found that even mediocre bosses, male or female, respond to this attitude by becoming better bosses, not just to me, but to those they can depend on. They forgo micromanagement, and what employee doesn't value that?

I feel that I provide value for my employer. And for my boss. And for myself. We all win. And in my profession, the customer (patient) winds most of all, which is what I am there for. A customer who might be my mother, brother, wife, son, father, or friend. Or a complete stranger.

That is most kind of you to say so, but I do feel pretty average in so many ways. And that fills me with positivity, because if I can thrive, so can others who are as average as me!

LOL, I have been married to a CCU, ICU, SICU nurse for decades, and I would have to say, it runs the gamut. Not only was I witness to it firsthand occasionally, I would hear the stories (as all spouses of those special types of nurses do)

So I would say it runs the gamut from the verbal to getting the job done!

My feeling is that men and women both bring things to the game. (I feel differently about women in combat roles in the military for specific reasons and exempt that from this discussion)

Men and women together in many things will be far stronger then either could be individually due to the different inherent skills each sex can bring to the table.

A good marriage is the best example of that. Obversely, a bad marriage makes it clear there is more to success then just putting men and women together and shaking it vigorously for it’s own diversity based sake.

My wife and I had dinner with two other couples recently, and we decided to play a. board game of some sort after dinner. Someone had the idea to make it men against women, a tactic I despise, and I let it be known.

It brings out all the bad things between men and women, and little of the good. I didn’t find it useful, constructive, or fun, even though it was only a board game. I thought things should have been mixed up. Teaming up by sex introduces a corrosive dynamic.

Did the men win?

I agree with you that men and women serve different purposes. It is said that men create civilizations, but women create homes. Women and men bring out the better qualities of each other.

I have always regarded you as A_perfect_lady, which is something I, as a man, admire.

I find the modern deliberate coarsening of women so they can be more like men to be repulsive in the extreme.

Many (though not all) modern women fail to understand that they possess the power to make a man, in equal tandem with him, far better than he would often be on his own.

This is something that showing she can drink and throw up in the same proportions he can simply won’t accomplish.

So I that light, I value a woman who is a lady. If that makes me a dinosaur, so be it.

As for mellowing...I don’t know. I struggle greatly with anger. I feel angry nearly all the time now, and it isn’t me, isn’t how I see myself. So I battle it on a daily basis, trying to keep it in context.

But I do know that over time, I don’t have to respond to every transgression. That takes maturity and wisdom, both things I still, even at my age, lack far more often than I like.

Now I can work on a task that frustrates me and take a breath instead of uttering a blue string of foul curses.

If I drop a glass of milk on the floor and it shatters, I can drop my head and sigh while reaching for paper towels to clean it up instead of throwing a mini-tantrum.

I would love to have my young 21 year old body. But not if I couldn’t take my senior citizen mind with me. If the choice was put to me, I would have to stick with my Senior Citizen mind, and it wouldn’t even be a contest.

In this, I am grateful for the aging process, because no amount of self control seemed to work that transformation for me. So, I could be mellower, and if I am, it makes me smile!

LOL, the game ended, the men were ahead, and the women did indeed get bad luck of the draws, but...I was glad it ended as it did!

Men and women can be at each other’s throats for a variety of things, I just didn’t want a fun game to be one of them!

Yes-men and women are wired differently, and vive la difference!

2022 is weird. Wonder what we will be like in 2030? Will we be past this WOKE crap? Men and women are equal but they have strengths and weaknesses. They are different. Yin and yang. All right. This isn’t rocket science.

I feel the same way about the patience that comes with age. And with being retired, because right up until I left the workplace, that copy machine could reduce me to trembling, wild-eyed, looking-for-a-hammer rage. LOL!
