The Cal State system graduates Black students at lower rates than other groups. Students, scholars and advocates say the reasons are myriad.

Depends on the field of study. A six month course in welding from Triangle Tech has more practical application than a PhD in transgender studies from Harvard.

Calculus is a great hurdle.

Which I have used exactly zero times in my career as an economist/supply chain forecaster/senior buyer.

Good post.

“Votes are more important than black lives.” — so very true! Everything the government has done out of false compassion has destroyed the black family. Black illegitimacy is 75%.

Of course, it really isn’t that much better for white families.

“ but people that might actually develop and succeed in the environment?”

Colleges do not get oodles and oodles of free money if they do that

I agree with your casual friend that their are numerous versions of English used in America. In my experience, many “people of color” function well enough in several of these, and jump between different versions depending on the audience.

Other countries have analogous situations. Muslims commonly know the Koran in “Classical Arabic”, but normal spoken Arabic varies so much that people in different regions don’t necessarily understand each other. In Iran, school students are required to learn Farsi as the “standard” language for official use; it is not the most common mother tongue. Similar story for regional forms of Chinese. Students who want to succeed in higher education learn to function in the Standard Language of their country. Only in the US is this an arena for excues and whining.

One thing to keep in mind is the Cal State system is the 2nd level public university system in California. The top tier is the University of California system, for example, Berkeley.
Given how aggressive colleges are with affirmative action, overtly or covertly, the Cal State system is getting the bottom third of black students.
There is no surprise these students cannot handle the course work. This was a long time ago but a huge proportion of black Cal State enrollees need remedial courses.

One issue at hand is what happened to CA education since 2020. Everything went online—K-12 both public and private, “Summer Bridge” type programs, community college, Cal State and UC. All with teachers untrained in online teaching, students cheating, students listless and unengaged. A lot of CA community college classes and Cal State and UC classes are STILL online which students report is “easier.”

Subpar education on top of education already subpar.

So no wonder 1/3 of Cal State San Marcos current sophs are on academic probation. Their last normal year of school was their SOPHOMORE year of HIGH SCHOOL.

I know. . .Calculus is a weeder class but my college son is already an excellent programmer. He got a 5 on the AP Java and AP Computer Science tests in high school and in fact already gets well paid coding jobs, but Calculus in college will be what stands in his way of getting his BS degree. He might have to take each semester of Calc twice in order to get past that hurdle.

I agree that we have these different Englishes here also. What I disagree with is that, in our country, we are saying it is ok to not learn “standard English” or use it as an admission criteria, because it’s not what you grew up with. I think it’s important for us to have a common language that we share, and should be educated towards in our youth. We shouldn’t accept illiteracy as a good thing. I do think it’s ok for us to strive to learn each other’s nuances in the language though. Otherwise, we end up like Babel in biblical times.

My grandparents were immigrants from Czechoslovakia and had to learn standard English. They took a lot of pride in becoming Americans, and learning the language was an honor, even if it was difficult for them. It was important to them that they spoke good English grammar. They impressed that (and many other values) on their children, and their grandchildren. Time to pass that along rather than saying it’s not necessary. We live in a very multicultural country. It is good to have a language that unites us.

Maybe consider hiring a tutor for that subject? He may need someone with better expertise to help him get through it.

Yup—if every student got a good grounding in statistics there would be a lot less tolerance for the endless fake “studies” using flawed methodology.

One is “underrepresented minorities” — a group comprising Black, Latino and Native American students. The other group includes everyone else, such as Asian and white students, which Cal State calls “non-underrepresented minority” students.

This is so twisted.

Whites are “non-underrepresented minority” students? Does that mean they are still "minority" students, just "represented minority" students?

This trend by "minority" writers to label people as "me" or "not me" instead of "me" and "you" leads to all sorts of upside-down reporting. Asians and Whites as “non-underrepresented minority” students should have been called "the majority of students," but that would have weakened the point the author was trying to make if the article clearly said that the majority of students were graduating just fine.

Oh, they will get well placed and make salaries three times what they deserve. And everyone will be afraid to fire them.

Even before classes went online, many college students took precalculus and calculus multiple times before passing. I had one student who aced all his math courses including Calc 1 & 2. I figured the others would do as well, but they were not as well-prepared (that’s another story). They hated those courses, dropped them, and switched majors. But, many of their friends stuck with it, taking precalculus and/or calculus twice before passing. Then, I read an article that said many students (including foreign students) take those courses multiple times before passing. Ironically, my student who did so well in calculus has never needed it for his job in a STEM field.

“the university’s Graduation 2025 campaign compares the graduation rates of two groups. One is “underrepresented minorities” — a group comprising Black, Latino and Native American students. The other group includes everyone else, such as Asian and white students, which Cal State calls “non-underrepresented minority” students.”

This insane butchering of the language makes me want to scream. We’re living 1984.

Separation is the only answer if you want a semblance of peaceful coexistence.

Yep. It is more like a weed course than a weeder course. The rudimentary basics of calculus might be marginally useful in economic forecasting and the like, but very marginally. They could be taught in an advanced algebra class.

We all had to memorize the quadradic equation back in the day. I still wonder if it has any practical use because I got damn near 50 years of work under my belt and have never used it since.
